Hermione will most certainly be black.
Hermione was called a "mudblood" by Draco and others because she had non-magical parents. This "magical racism" was a main point throughout the books and part of Voldemorts character as well.
My concern is how Hermione being black will affect the overall story. It isn't like a normal race swap.
Are they really going to have a white Draco calling a black Hermione "filthy mudblood" on this show?
To me, that would trigger alot of people. And also change the storyline from magical prejudice to real world racism.
They will open a giant can of worms if they go this route. But maybe they want controversy to drive ratings.

That's a really good point.

baw you really can't see she was using magical prejudice as a reflection of real prejudice

a good example of this being able to expand on the books is Ginny Weasley.
Not just Ginny but most of the Weasleys outside of Molly, Arthur and the Twins need to be expanded on. Movie Ron was a much worse character than book Ron. Same with Percy, Bill and Charlie. Hell, we didn’t even get Charlie in the movies and very little of Percy and Bill and even Ginny.
But they aren’t the only characters that can be done better. Bagman, who we didn’t even get. Barty Crouch Jr, Winky the house elf, Cedric showing up earlier than Goblet of Fire, Peeves, Rita Skeeter, and some others. Hell, even Dumbledore needs a better adaptation. Richard Harris was good but he passed before everything was finished. Michael Gambon didn’t really get the character right until Half Blood Prince. But like others have said, it’s going to be really hard to get past the performances we got from the old actors, particularly Slughorn, Harry, McGonagal, Snape and Hagrid and even Voldemort

Yes, duh.
You can't see the issue that would create for the entire HP plotline?
Linoge makes a very valid point that having a black Hermione would muddy the waters (no pun intended) between the magic-based racism of HP, which is an extremely important part of the story, and skin-based racism.
Someone who's not really thinking it through might say "but that's the analogy!" Yes, the key word being "analogy."
Is a white Draco and his white friends prejudiced against Hermione because her skin is a different color than theirs? Or because her parents are mixed magical blood?
One of these is a critical cornerstone of the HP story; the other would be unnecessary noise and clutter.

I just think that's reaching.
racism is racism whether it's race or magical.

And I respectfully disagree. It's a magical analogy for a story about magic and wizards.
Voldemort wanted a pure race of wizards and witches. Skin tone wasn't a factor.
Hermione is the only lens we get into the whole "mudblood" thing all the way through like Book 3 or 4, so it's not like there are a lot of other reference points we have for who "mudbloods" are. Making Hermione black would insinuate - even if only indirectly - that skin tone is a factor. That's not the story.

Oh no it isn't. You must live in a bubble. Racism against blacks is on another level compared to other people. A person can be bigoted against whites, asians or hispanics all day long and not suffer much consequence.
But when an incident happens against blacks, is filmed, and goes viral? The nation burns.
HBO better tread carefully here. My guess is they do race swap Hermione but don't use the term mudblood and play down that aspect of the story.

They should really skip the first four books and save us from child actor hell.

you do realize Rowling never specified Hermione's race?
Didn't Rowling say Hermione was herself?

We saw the blonde haired black skinned Targarians in House of the Dragon.
Get ready for red haired, black skinned Weasley brothers and some of them will be gay.

Lol love these idiotic comments from people that clearly haven’t read that Rowling is an executive producer

Or they could just not use the term mudblood if people think it's racist.

I mean, the term mudblood has a pretty big presence in the story

Fair enough. Didn't realize it was that prominent of a term. But you might as well prepare yourself for the race swap, it's happening.

Rowling has more control over her IP than most writers. She won't let them screw it up like Lucas let Disney screw Star Wars. Harry and Ron will be what they are supposed to be. Hermoine could be Black. It wouldn't change the character much, even in description. If there is any changes to appearance, gender, etc. it will be with the teachers.
