I thought it was pretty apparent he was talking about an ejection seat.
The problem is that Koichi says effectively he’s willing to complete his mission with the understanding of what that means. Tachibana seems to stoically approve.
Of course, it’s not the greatest plot twist in cinematic history, but it works well enough.
And even with that, it’s still 50-50 on whether or not Koichi will utilize the ejection seat. It was there for an option, but it was Tachibana conveying to him that he should live which is the key moment. He’s giving him a choice, it’s time to put this war behind both of them and to start looking to the future.
*And even WITH the option to eject, there's still a very real chance that things don't go well, and Koichi dies, regardless. That part can't be overlooked. He's flying around in a really powerful bomb.

Terrific movie. Hard to believe they can produce something like this for $27 million, whereas Disney produces garbage for $200 million.

More like $12-14 million. The director was asked about the low budget, of 15 million, and he said he WISHED it was that much.

It was great. It had an actual character arc even though it was a monster movie. The monster effects were definitely an homage to the man-in-the-suit of the originals.
I was interested in the outcome of the main character and those around him. Godzilla was represented in its original allegorical context. Outside of one scene in the movie, it was as believable as a monster movie can be.
It was great. It also showed that great movies can be made for far less than the price tags that most major American studios budget.
And the cynic in me loved that in made Hollywood producers look like idiots.

I would love a sequel but I have no clue how they pull one off while maintaining the quality.
They'd almost need to add a second Kaiju, but that likely diminishes the human element and raises the cheese factor.

I'm fine with them taking time to kick around the idea of a sequel. Years would be fine, if it's even feasible to write a compelling script. Just like with Shin Godzilla, there's a opportunity to branch off into an entirely different direction and NOT follow down the parade of monsters that routinely fight each other or end up tag teaming another threat, ala pro wrasslin'. Been there, done that.
We definitely don't need another 70 years of THAT with Godzilla.

Man, what a brilliant film. A little Japanese overacting could not take that away. Great plot and effects, very good directing. Story beats were on point.
Terrific film.

best godzilla movie I've seen and even got to see it in color with no subtitles

I am so glad I went and saw this in the theater...
Really should have been nominated for an Oscar. Any Oscar.
Just to throw it a bone...

Missed that. Changed my mind. Should have been a bigger Oscar.
Then I wouldn't have missed it.

Agreed 100%.
The interesting thing about a movie franchise of 30+ that's spanned 70 years is they've NEVER done back to back Godzilla flicks in a continuum. Yes, shin and minus one were b2b, but they were in a different universe.
I honestly can't imagine a Godzilla only sequel to minus one.
Maybe it's just better for them to take another 5-10 years and do another reimagining rather than a sequel.

If I were to compile a list of the top ten movies from the past fifteen years, I'm not sure how I'd rank them. However, I can say with certainty that "Godzilla Minus One" and "The Death of Stalin" would definitely be in the top ten.

What? They absolutely did this in the Heisei era

Definitely some room to explore Godzilla‘s history in minus one. The locals of Odo Island knew of the creature. But for how long?
Did it serve as protector of the area? Or just a demon from the depths. We never really get any explanation of why he showed up that night at the airfield and was so PO’d.

Is Minus Color for nostalgia purposes only or does it provide some kind of benefit i'm not thinking of?
Ghost of Tsushima also had this and I preferred the color version
