English dubbing. Actor says in an American dialect “Why are you so fat? You need to eat more vegetables.”

Asian accent dubbing. Actor says in an angry Asian accent, “Why yusso fat? Eat mo vegtables!”

Think this is now my favorite movie from 2023. Pissed I didn’t see it in theaters, but what a well done movie and breath of fresh air. Good story telling and straight on the point. About as well of a job giving depth to characters as you can do in a “monster” movie. It’s an awesome mix of Jaws/Godzilla.

Amazing what good filmmakers, who care about what they’re doing can achieve even on a shoestring budget.

This is spot on. More I think of it, Godzilla is just a backdrop for the main story. Like a background antagonist. May as well be a tornado or other storm or something that has to be overcome. The characters and the story of redemption is the main point.

ETA: just seeing what Japan was like after WW2 makes me also think how amazing it is that Japan today is now so much more advanced and modernized as a society than just about any other country.

Makes me think of the movie Gung Ho.

Bonus if they reach their goal, but nothing if they come up 1 car short.

I think they crushed their bonus threshold.

Halfway through, living up to the hype so far.

The first Godzilla scene I thought I was watching Jurassic Park, it took me a minute to realize he would morph.

The ocean scene was awesome.

Japan’s transformation over the last 100 years is one of the craziest in human history.

Major departure from the OP… but those “4K walking the streets of Tokyo at night” videos are downright depressing.

OK, finished it, it's the best Godzilla movie I've seen, even better than '54.

totally exceeded expectations.

ETA - i really regret not catching this in theater

What I like about this movie is soooo many call backs and nods to previous Godzilla movies. Even Legendary. From the shot of Godzilla swimming under the ship, I think a random tail whip and the 'oxygen destroyer' variant that Doc came up with was brilliant.

Watching now. Definitely leans into the human element. Grief and survivor’s guilt are more than anything I’ve seen from a similar movie.

I’m not a huge Godzilla fan outside of American tentpoles but it’s really solid.

I feel like I’m losing a lot by having English Dubs. Not the worse ever but I know I’m missing some emotion

I started with English dubs and switched over to subtitles about 20 minutes in. You definitely lose a lot of emotion with dubbing.

Godzilla definitely didn't skip leg day. His thighs were so big he could barely walk

I won’t pretend to be cultured but I genuinely felt offended at the English/American dubbing during squid game.

A sincere WTF. I’m from West Texas and we do not sound like that in any circumstances

Finished. Didn’t expect that ending. Both the ejector seat and the survival of Nariko.

Fine movie. Some real humanity from a monster film which I feel has been lacking.

The only thing I would've preferred is one more Godzilla scene between the ginza attack and the final battle. We went a while without seeing the big fella.

when they were gearing up for the final battle, and the soundtrack launched into the OG fanfare music from the ‘54 version, i literally had chills

and the callbacks were so subtly done that they never took you out of the action

this thread makes me very happy

And yet at the same time, this is easily the most terrifying Godzilla has ever been depicted. There was even a chilling hint of Jaws when it was chasing the boat. And that was because, as you said, the main story of the characters were so well-developed, the invested theater audience feared for their safety.

Great characters. Great monster. Best Godzilla movie ever made.
