I did as well and would never have watched but for this thread. Glad I did.

I liked it, as well. Very different from most Godzilla movies. This movie had the best pure story. Also, I enjoy a more dickish, evil Godzilla, which this one had.

Did anybody else catch some Jaws vibes during the encounter with the mine sweeping boat?
absolutely

I saw it in the theater but can't remember, was it dubbed with English as it is on Netflix?
It must not have been dubbed in the theater because the English dubbing feels less genuine with worse voice actors.

I mean have you seen the astounding Diversity in the Atlas cast? If only for this they should ONY advertise Atlas for this month.

evil Godzilla,
Absolutely. But here's the thing which I've not heard anyone discuss... what pisses Godzilla off in the 1st place?
The locals on the island have known of Godzilla for a while. They recognized the patterns of deep-sea fish floating on the surface as a portent of his arrival. So why does he show up then? At night? When all was quiet? The war had been going on for years and was almost over. The airbase, while relatively new, wasn't getting much action. Yes, the Americans had made a few runs at the airfield, but never landed there.
Then the nuclear testing happened, and that really turned him into the Godzilla we all know.
In the original 1954 version, Godzilla was a not-so-subtle message on the horrors of nuclear weapons, and a bane for the people of Japan. THEY caused all this, and were meant to suffer.
But G-1 doesn't seem to have the same straight forward feel. Yes, Koichi is guilt ridden for all sorts of reasons, but that seems disconnected to the appearance of Godzilla.
The big lizard just shows up in a mood and starts going Mesozoic on the world.

Oppenheimer partnered with John Hammond to create Godzilla as a back up plan to the A bomb.

Up until about a year ago, I had only seen the 1956 Raymond burr edit.
I watched the original 1954 version a year ago and was pretty surprised how explicit and in your face the movie was about nuclear weapons.

At the beginning of the film, he is annoyed at the intrusion of soldiers on the island, furious that the war is disturbing his sacred waters.

That would make more sense, but the problem is there wasn’t anything happening at the time. All was quiet and it was night time. Plus, it was the very end of the war. Of course, all we saw was a quiet little landing strip with nothing else. Maybe there was more activity away from the airfield, but the audience was never given any indication.

We're told later that the island was never attacked by the Americans because it was only used for that plane repair station.

Could just be Godzilla being territorial

No commentary on how they got like 40 tugboats tied up to two different ships in like 15 seconds for what was an already terrible plan? Or the fact Godzilla let himself get wrapped by the boats he could have easily destroyed in the first place?

No. Any more questions?

It's not people like me, it's lazy film makers. I agree the human plot was really good but the Godzilla development was weak. I enjoyed it overall but it had more potential than it delivered.
