and they did if for a tiny fraction of the budget that Hollywood filmmakers burn through for far less ambitious projects

So why does he show up then? At night? When all was quiet?

That certainly does fit one narrative. But of course, it also leaves room open for a deeper backstory. Godzilla‘s far older arc could overlap Koichi’s , and then continue. He could just be one in a long line of victims to the demon from the sea.

What was the black stuff spreading on Aikiko’s neck at the end in the hospital?
-It absolutely met the hype
-Something was off w/Godzilla’s look, the way he carried his arms/hands. Looked like Ricky Bobby few times
-Loved the underlying theme of the Japanese people and the post war effects on their lives. I was not expecting that
-The speech Doc gave about how Japan’s view of death has been wrong this whole time, all the while dude thinking he’s gonna kamakazi himself
-Those kind of speeches are hard to pull off, easy to sound corny. But this was well written and acted.
-The tugboat scene was dumb but whatever
-Very much want to see the B&W version

This was probably one of my favorite Godzilla's but I think they're trying to cram too much into this one particular movie that they could've saved for a possible sequel or a prequal. The way they rushed out to see for the final scene made very little sense as far as timing is concerned. They were standing on the pier and virtually see Godzilla in front of them but somehow managed to get on the ship and drive all the way out to the trench and then run into him again was to me the worst part. They could've left way more to the imagination to figure out in later movies.

I actually agree that the tugboat thing was the only stupid part of the movie.

I thought the human element of the ending was incredibly stupid, but I did really like the movie, and would put this as the best godzilla movie behind the original.
You're going to give me a twist with a flashback to a piece of dialogue removed from the conversation just so we could have a twist? No thanks. Then you're going to give me another unlikely feel good moment? Choose one.

In the scene where the mechanic is showing the pilot the ins and outs of the cockpit, at the very end he says something like, "and there's one more thing", and the scene is over. I thought it was pretty apparent he was talking about an ejection seat.

Yeah, I didn't like that,either
Overall, though, it's a good movie.

Also, I enjoy a more dickish, evil Godzilla, which this one had.
I kept wondering if they were going to give Godzilla some motivation or shades of being a good guy.
Nope, he was just there to **** stuff up and leave.
Pretty legit movie overall. Not at all a monster fight movie like the recent US theater versions. Actually pretty good character building with Godzilla there as a pure antagonist.

Watched it.
Phenomenal movie.
Incredible all around.
Lives up to the hype.

Minor criticisms, but there were some aspects of that sequence which seemed a bit forced. Like how Godzilla got the jump on everyone and showed up on their doorstep while the ships were still at the docks.
(Also, by what mechanism did he lift and toss the boat flying on land like that. Amazing to see, but how'd it end up traveling on that trajectory?)
Were it not for Koichi's plan, they'd all be screwed. He's the one who came up with the idea of a fighter plane, then to get the mechanic Tachibana to get it fit for service. No way does Doc's plan have any prayer of working otherwise.
In short, as Koichi flies to intercept Godzilla, then annoy the hell out of him enough to chase him, Doc's team has the necessary time to get into position. About as plausible as anything can be, I suppose.
But my biggest disappointment with G-1 is the English dub. I was legit looking forward to seeing this version but despite trying several times, I always flip it back to Japanese with English sub-titles. The English voice actors simply lack any feeling or heart in how they deliver their lines. Koichi's neighbor, Sumiko was most evident. I felt none of the bitterness and annoyance in her voice as she first scolds Koichi, taunts him and his 'found' girl and child, then comes around to being effectively the aunt to the little girl.
And the subtle humor of Koichi's face when he sees the 'special' boat he'll be working on... always works.

I loved the movie. I wish they had rewarded the main character with just a bit of stoicism at the end of the movie. He was justifiably a mess most of the movie but he redeemed himself and saved his people. When he meets Noriko at the end, he is still an emotional mess. Wish they had let him move on just a little and regain his poise.

This movie was overhyped. It's an okay, fun movie, but the people thinking that it should've been nominated as best foreign film for the Oscars are high.
The story was a bit silly, even for a Japanese monster film. Seemed like something that would fit well as anime or manga.
Entertaining, but not great by any means.

I completely whiffed on this one and missed it until I threw it on because I love this type of stuff. I got so much more than I expected, fantastic movie that I’ve been thinking about days after watching.

Not sure you watched the same movie I did.
Koichi's been carrying around the guilt of not having followed through with his kamikaze obligation, the shame of not firing on Godzilla when he had a chance, the death of all those on Odo Island, the death of his parents, the scorn of his neighbor, and then the loss of Noriko. Then there's the burden of having to be a single parent, only to convince himself to try to take down Godzilla once and for all and carry through on his Kamikaze mission, while leaving young Akiko all alone.
FF to the end where Koichi...
Doesn't kamikaze himself, takes down Godzilla and 'avenges' those on Odo Island, gains his honor and some level of respect from Tachibana, makes his parents proud because he can finally 'return' alive, since his war is over. And then he gets the news about Noriko, and now seemingly has a future AND a family... dude has earned a bit of emotional out pouring.

I did too, which made the expository flashback unnecessary. I like that he ejected and lived; I didn't like how the film handled the explanation of it.
