Interesting question. I don't think so, but I really like him. My favorite is The Thing. And there's always Tombstone. But I'm not sure about his "range" and he doesn't really have a "heavy hitter movie" like The Godfather, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Forrest Gump. He's a good leading man and can play a badass..but can he "act" as well as Paul Giamatti or Phillip Seymore Hoffman?

I guess it depends on how many seats are at that table. In some ways he's competing for Tom Cruise's seat..

No but he does at the greatest American star table. He's more like John Wayne or Charlton Heston; iconic and perfect at what he does but probably not in the best American actors discussion.

Great body of work, never got into any shite, by all accounts a good guy. Yeah I’d co-sign.

My first thought was why?
My next was why not?
Great diversity of roles and solid or higher performance in most, and great continuity to even present day.

Fully support.

He has kind of an everyman appeal. I'm not able to think of a perfect comparison
If you just go with adult roles, I would say Chris Pratt.

Likeable, can be goofball. Actually a fairly big dude that, in the right role, looks like he can kick someone's arse.

Like him a lot. Always try to see his movies.

And you can almost put KR and Jeff Bridges in the same chair. And put next to them Gary Bussey.

Better be a lot of seats at that table.

I like him as an actor, but I can think of at least a dozen others I'd put before him, if not more.

Played minor-league ball including a few seasons on his dad’s Portland Mavericks.

If you haven’t watched The Battered Bastards of Baseball doc, do it. How the Russell family hasn’t made a feature film about Bing Russell’s team is beyond me.

In terms of on screen charisma, few are better. Captain Ron is a silly summer comedy movie, and he is just spectacular in that role. Just all charisma

He’s sweet, but definitely not top shelf.

What are his top 2 marquee roles?

I love Big Trouble as much as the next guy, but he’s more Randall Cunningham - fun to watch - than Tom Brady/Drew Brees

Good analogy.

Tombstone is probably his heavy hitter.

Christian Bale and Leo seem to be doing okay, but your point here is solid. He's been around so long, too, and done so much. I don't think his resume is strong for pure acting chops, but he nailed things like Escape from New York, Tombstone, Miracle, etc., without question. I'd have to noodle on it some more.

I wonder if he turned down any roles that would have been career-defining.

No, but it’s a pretty small table for me

Tom Cruise
Tom Hanks
Jack Nicholson

I don’t think Russell makes a top 10, even though I do enjoy his acting a lot

He's probably my favorite actor.

He's not a Daniel Day Lewis or Brando or anything like that, but he has brought some of the best characters to the screen in the modern era. Jack Burton, Snake Plissken, Wyatt Earp, the guy's played Elvis and even Santa Claus and he always makes you like what he does.

He's great at action, comedy, drama, sports movies... minus the director chops, he's a little like Mel Gibson. Gibson was hardly a Daniel Day Lewis but try and picture Daniel Day Lewis doing a breezy comedy.

I don't know if he deserves a seat at your greatest actor table because that's a big list, but he's certainly one of the more memorable.
