The big reveal scene in the back yard is just so well done. Totally didn’t see the daughter connection the first time I saw it. And then when Kevin Bacon shows up.

They don’t make movies like this anymore. Just a good story with a great cast that’s not a big part of a big tent pole or sequel.

Pretty underrated movie and I think my brain imploded when the big reveal happened

I never saw that coming and had to pause the movie to process everything

The look on Ryan Gosling’s face when he’s like “You’re David Lindhagen..?” is so great.

This movie is awesome. Best chick flick of all time IMO.

Not a chick flick IMO. It appeals to everyone.

It is a true romantic comedy, in the sense that it is a comedy about romance.

I’d rival it next to Jerry McGuire. Chick flicks that appeal to guys.

Define chick flick in a way that doesnt just mean “dramedy with elements of romance”

Because CSL is at its core a movie about 2 men with opposing strengths/weakness opening up to each other and helping each other grow.

The romance elements are simply to show their growth.

It’s in no way a chick flick.

I like this movie way more than I thought I would.

And no, it's NOT a chick flick. In fact, the one flaw in the movie is that the wife is given way too much of a pass for being a cheating whore.

Steve Carrell is a loyal, loving, hard working husband who is a complete victim in the story. His wife is a typical spoiled, entitled, middle class white woman whore who gets bored with her great life and seeks out some Lindenhagen dick. frick her. And frick the writers for not making her the villain that she most certainly is.

Hell, David Lindenhagen gets punched in the nose for fricking her, but he didn't force himself on her. She offered and he accepted. Not the best move in terms of the bro code of not fricking a married woman. But hey, if she's slinging the pussy at you, you are only so strong. SHE's the real villain.

Friend,

I agree with your assessment.

quote:

Crazy, Stupid, Love: At first glance, one might conclude that this is a movie about divorce and the tremendous pain to individuals, family, and the community at large that it causes. A deeper inspection, however, reveals that the movie is about romantic love: how we lose it, how we find it, how we fight for it.

Romantic comedies are almost always told through the female perspective, but this movie flips the genre on its head, and we see romance from male eyes. It's quite refreshing, for in it, we see that the ways males approach romantic love are just as crazy, just as stupid, just as irrational as females. The journey to that romantic love brings males to the edges of insanity. What we find in the end, is that through our "wildly unhappy" times, we will find what we are looking for in our soulmate, who, one can only conclude, is a reflection of our own soul.

Men are melancholy beings, and in our melancholy, we become lonely, and in our loneliness, we find unsuitable pleasures that distract us from our loneliness, but do little from making us less lonely. The cure for our loneliness? The theme of the movie? Basically, that romantic love is life's ultimate telos and until we capture it, we will remain restless and yearning. Whether you agree with that philosophy is a matter of debate, but this movie, through a technique that borrows from Greek tragedy (the fall of a flawed character), 19th century Russian literature (emphasis on the character rather than the action and looking seriously at the human condition without being afraid to poke fun at it), and 1980's American sitcoms (a connective, universal conclusion), does a fine job of arguing its point.

My biggest criticisms of the movie are the casting of the males. I don't like Steve Carell as an actor. I cannot get his defining career scene: caught up in a bout of glossolalia in a television studio. He's a worthy slap-stick comedian, but it's hard to see him as anything but that, no matter how hard he tries to break that image. Ryan Gosling isn't very impressive either. I don't think he's handsome enough to pull off the playboy image. The women, on the other hand, even in their roles as support, are perfect. Julianne Moore is a fantastic actress who can play almost any character. Emma Stone, who isn't nearly as attractive as some say, gives another outstanding, if sarcastic, performance. I hope she will expand her repertoire because she has much more to offer. 8/10

I have definitely mellowed to both Gosling, whom I believe deserves Best Actor for his stunningly hilarious and profound work in the year's best film, Barbie, and Steve Carrell, whose work in Beautiful Boy still haunts me.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Dude, “white woman whore” is not the preferred nomenclature.

“Cuckoldress”, please.

Agreed. It was a fine movie. Gosling and Stone’s date made me laugh.
Carell gave his usual solid performance. And yes, the story was well- conceived and directed.

It's a drama/rom-com. Rom-com's are often just viewed as a chick flick. It's not some outrageous claim to call it a chick flick.

If my wife ever cheated, I'm pretty sure it'd be unforgivable and I'd 100% be done. But as far as the movie goes, I don't think I'd view her as a whore. Steve Carrell was more of a whore than she was actually. If the writers made her out to be some terrible villain that everybody just hated and could never forgive, the story wouldn't be the story that it is. They pulled it off in a very real sense showing both of their flaws. And it was evident her flaws were much worse so it's not like they were cutting her a break. To have it written the way you wanted it to, it's be a completely different movie with a different theme. They might as well have had Steve Carrell just continue to keep hooking up with women and they never get back together.

I don't know that dude was pushing pretty damn hard and was quick to try to pounce again when he saw there may be a sliver of an opening. He's not the villain, but he is very sleazy with the way he operates.

Just watched it . 6.5/10 . Had some funny moments. Lot to nitpick, though .

The slut baby sitter makes sense after her dad sees the nudes and auto assume his sweet precious girl had nothing to do with those. Hell, even after she admitted it was all her the dad still tries to attack Cal.

Crazy reveal scene in the end is crazy. Everyone knows everyone and everything.

I do agree that if you are going to flirt and hook up with women at a bar , you can’t do that in New Balance’s Jacob was giving Cal some good coaching on that one .
