he does have responsibility for it, as others have eloquently mentioned. He lost his masculinity, and he lost his confidence. He quit. He became, as another poster mentioned, invisible.

She's not angry that he slept with other women (though that's how it comes across, but the issue is never the issue with women). She's angry that he had the balls to pull it off, and wonders why he didn't do that with her.
also - buuuuuuullllshiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt. she treated him like HE cheated on HER after that, and like he was the one who had to earn the other back.
great movie (which i watched because of this thread), but like Henry a couple posts up, this part made my irrationally annoyed

yes - responsibility for HIS actions. not responsibility for HER actions, which was what you said in your previous post

She fricked around while they were married and not separated. And then continued to see the dude she was fricking after he moved out.
My post was from three years ago but I might as well reply. I think my point was mainly yes, she made slimy (and in my opinion an unforgivable) decision, but that doesn't necessarily make her a whore. She's a bad person and a cheater, don't know if I'd call her a whore.
quote:
He fricked around AFTER they were separated. There was nothing morally wrong with what he was doing. He wasn’t cheating on her.
Never said there was anything morally wrong with his character, but he whored himself out and more power to him.
quote:
Thats what should have happened and it would have been a happier ending for him. Instead she got to be a whore and step out on their marriage for a while only to get it all back at the end because he had to “fight for her”? frick that noise
Again, I love this movie but my blood pressure does rise up and when talking about it sometimes
I disagree and was originally in reply to the "frick the writers" comment. I think it's one of the best rom coms of all time, completely changing the story isn't going to help the movie. While like I say I don't think i could have forgiven my wife, I have no problem with someone else that does decide to do that. Steve Carrells character had an empty life despite his whoring around and he still loved his wife, if that's what he wants to do, then fine. Him continuing to be miserable despite having sex with a lot of women isn't a good ending.

60-70% of marriages survive infidelity.
i know people that are married 30 years later after an affair in the 20s and are seemingly happy.

I'm not sure I could disagree with you more than I currently do in this thread.
I love this movie, but the thing that always pisses me off about it is this idea that Cal has to stick it out and try to make it work with Emily because she "is his soulmate." And he has to get her back to appease his shithead son.
frick that. It's completely okay for you to give up on your "soulmate" when she hauls off and fricks that douche David Lindhagen from work. Also, if she's off sucking David's Hog(en) then maybe she wasn't your soulmate after all anyway. And she didn't want Cal back until he had moved on. She fully went on several dates with Lindhagen (i.e. putting in effort to create a relationship with him), including lying to the kids/babysitter about who and what he was.
it's also bullshite that the movie makes Cal out to be the bad guy for fricking nine chicks (NINE?!?!) as a single man. Good for him. At least he waited until the marriage was over with before fricking other people.
All that being said, I do think the movie handles the emotions involved in everything VERY well, and as much as I hate the Emily character, Julianne Moore plays her exceptionally well. You can actually believe the emotions of both Emily and Cal, especially in the second half of the movie.
Also, as incredible as a gift it is that Jessica gives to Robbie, she's basically providing an underaged child with pornography. And once his parents find those pics (which is inevitable), shite is gonna hit the fan.
And it makes me a little sad that there are people out there who love this movie but never watched The Pick-Up Artist on VH1. Man, that was such an awesome show.
ETA: I see that HJJ and I align on this movie.

and she was underage herself, which does add a somewhat disturbing CP b-plot to the movie

15 years ago we wouldn't find that abusive or manipulative, but a lot has changed since 2012.

6.5/10 . Had some funny moments. Lot to nitpick, though .
Wut? It's objectively one of the best written and clever movies of the 2010's, and certainly one of the best romantic comedies of all time with great actors from top to bottom.

After someone said it earlier, it really clicked. This is ultimately a bromance movie between Carrell and Gosling.
It’s such a great flick and I’ll watch it anytime I come across it on tv.

Ha, fair enough. Perhaps I've been unclear, as I agree with everyone in this thread about the fact that:
A: Cal shouldn't have gotten back with her
B: she's a cheating whore who isn't sympathetic
C: Cal is a good man, a great provider, and a doting husband
All I've suggested, from the beginning, is that, as Gosling's character reminds him, Cal lost his manhood. This is as repulsive to a woman as gaining 300 lbs is to a man. Lindhagen is a dickhead, but he's shown to be the competent, capable man that Cal no longer is. Cal ultimately has responsibility for what he, himself, became. He figures that out, and improves himself with Gosling's help. Cal improves Gosling, too. Cal wishes he had Gosling's confidence. Gosling wishes he had Cal's family. Both improve in their weaknesses over the course of the flick.
Julianne Moore bears 100% of the responsibility for her cheating. No two ways around it. I wish the movie didn't reward her for her selfish, destructive actions.

Definitely, Maybe might have something to say about that

I love the movie but I hate the underlying theme that basically tries to blame Cal for his wife cheating. And then when THEY ARE SEPARATED she has the audacity to act like him sleeping with 9 women is an issue??
Well again, in my view it highlights the fallacy of the fourth wave feminist movement: women want to work, tell men to be in touch with their feelings and supportive at home then reject the man they become when they do.

Another unintentional takedown of modern women: they break up with a guy, then if he goes on to become more successful professionally or with other women it drives them insane.
They need the man to struggle to validate their decision to cheat and leave, because if he was good enough for other women to chase him then she by definition was the problem.

I dont see this movie as being a chick flick at all. it was really only a couple steps behind Wedding Crashers as being a total bro movie. like someone else said in this thread, it's really only the name of the movie that makes it seem like a chick flick (which is probably why they went with that name honestly - get more butts in seats)

nope, Julianne Moore - both her and her character

Yep and it's so much easier when I hate the person playing the character

good film, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling are great in this one. And of course Marisa Tomei continues to smoke onscreen
