Tom Hanks as Hanratty in Catch Me If You Can.

Don't think anyone really knows what he was going for there.

He probably just read the last name Hanratty and came up with an accent to match.

Hanks is 0-2 doing New England accents in Catch Me if You Can and Captain Phillips. He really should leave those alone. In general, I can't think of any other great actor on Hanks' tier that strikes out so often with horrible accent work.

His accent in Elvis is extremely distracting.

My Elvis knowledge is fairly limited, so maybe it was a spot on impersonation of the Colonel, but it was a major detriment to the movie for me.

Dick Van Dyke's horrendous Cockney attempt in Mary Poppins is widely regarded as the worst of all time

It was so bad that a few years later when he was cast for the male lead in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which he played an English inventor with an English-accented father and two English-accented children, the director must have apparently told him not to even try to match them and just use his regular voice.

Colin Farrell in American Outlaws is unbelievably bad, particularly when you consider he’s a decent actor.

Ive heard legends of a peculiar southern accent from Nic Cage in Con Air... never watched that movie, though, so I couldn't say.

For some reason, my mind read this in Nic's accent...

Did you know Elwes is from generationally old English money?

On a related note, a guy that almost never acts in his own natural American/British hybrid accent, Christopher Guest, is a hereditary English Baron (which makes his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, a Baroness.)

(Krikey - he was also in Princess Bride...)
