Charlize Theron's southern accent in Bagger Vance and Ewan McGregor's American accent in anything are far worse than Elwes.

On a related note, a guy that almost never acts in his own natural American/British hybrid accent, Christopher Guest, is a hereditary English Baron (which makes his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, a Baroness.) (Krikey - he was also in Princess Bride...)

Yep… think about this for Christmas Vacation… Julia Louis-Dreyfus, her husband in the movie Nicholas Guest (his brother), Chevy Chase… all from OLD OLD money… then you have Beverly D’Angelo whose grandfather designed the The Horseshoe stadium for Ohio State, and she was a backup singer for The Band back in the day… power couples over on Griswold Lane…

Her southern accent in Devil’s Advocate was pretty bad.

The one in Bagger Vance sounded like she was doing an SNL skit.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it… Will Smith’s “yessa” accent was on point.

He probably just read the last name Hanratty and came up with an accent to match.
Honestly, this explanation makes the most sense.

It was so bad that a few years later when he was cast for the male lead in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which he played an English inventor with an English-accented father and two English-accented children, the director must have apparently told him not to even try to match them and just use his regular voice.
If you watch the beginning of that movie, you hear him try to do an English accent very briefly (pay close attention to him yelling "open the throttle, and keep it open!")

I'm guessing that was the first scene they filmed, and the director said, "Ehhhh, enough of that Dick, just be yerself"

ETA - on the subject of bad Southern accents:
