re: Amazon put out a "superfans" video about LOTR: Rings of Power

I was going to give the show the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best but that video with hired actors pretending to be super fans is an atrocity to everything Tolkien. It was a infomercial on how Amazon is striving to cater to the politically correct environment we currently live in.
It is one thing to add cast to create a greater representation of an audience you are hoping to attract to the series but it is another thing to advertise they are doing it specifically to adhere to the politically correct minions that push a narrative that will ever change the Tolkien experience based on an identity politics and the lore so many come to love.

Everything you ever loved in entertainment is going to be woke going forward. Just accept it. Its deliberate and it's going to happen. Maybe in 20 years when this shite ends there will be an opportunity to right the wrongs, but it won't happen anytime soon.
Think of any property you loved in movies, tv, games, etc. And I promise you those characters and stories will be butchered for LGBTQ and "I want characters who look like me" B.S..
This is what Marxism does, constantly destroys, never creates, always dividing along race and gender.

I’m sorry, but Tolkien fans are very dedicated and talk in a very specific manner.
Do they usually not know the literary definition of setting?

It is obvious Sammy hasn’t read Tolkien and sure as shite isn’t a fan of his.
I know It’s not set in WWI Europe.

They absolutely are trying to market this show to as many people as possible.
I have no issue with marketing with the hope of expanding the viewer audience by casting specific demographics with the hope that more people may enjoy the story and become a fan of the lore. So having a black elf or dwarf even without a beard I can live with and as you said is cosmetic and does not change to overall story arc from that standpoint.
The issue though is that video made it go from just being cosmetic to actually addressing current day political ideologies an incorporating them into a fantasy fiction story line that will not add any value to the story. Again a black elf or whatever demographic you pick for a cast member so be it but the talk in that video sounded like changing the narrative of the story foundation with empowering minorities and a story based around how a minority demographic(s) is trying to overcome a oppressed environment.

OML, don’t respond to this fricking dishonest retard anymore.

Smell eachother’s farts some more.
OML can’t tell you what a settingnis but he can tell you the language in which Tolkien fans converse.

The irony is that you seem to be defending the trolls in that video as if they were actually true fans but fail to do any research to see they were hired because they represent specific demographics and have large followings online.
The moderator Mistah Islah is Muslim who beside being a film maker advocates for political injustice against Muslims and other minorities.
Joel Rochester has a huge following as well as he advocates for more diversity in fictional stories, especially bi-sexual inclusion and has a following for that as he promotes bisexual fantasy characters.
Chanel Williams is all over the place in her political beliefs but strongly advocates for women and is there on that panel as she has several million followers on TikTok.
Kelsey Ellison matches the demographic for disabled because she lost an eye but also a large following on Youtube
So besides being well known advocates for a specific demographic and being followed on social media there is one other thing they all have in common.
None Of Them Are Super Fans and outside of this video have no connection, mention, or tag associated with them and the Lord of the Rings.

Not really defending the video. Jsut not writing the show off because Marketing is tone deaf.

I’d argue they are hyper focused on “tone” lol

I've read this whole thread.
I've read LotR all the way through 8 times. In middle and high school I read it every summer. I've read The Hobbit probably as many times. I've read parts of the Silmarillion once, and I admit, it was a tough read. I'm no expert on that book for certain.
But Sammy, you are delusional and in denial. Or a big fat troll.
And there are TONS of Tolkien fans and experts that agree that this woke shite sucks.
Here's a great sample.
Take your loss and go away now (in my best Critical Drinker voice)

I’m not reading through this thread, but I’ll share my opinion.
Having watched this video, I am finally confident that this series is going to be a disaster.
Furthermore, if they made this series to appeal to the four “Superfans” having this discussion, it’s going to be unrecognizable. “Why were the rings made?” Are they serious? My irritation has nothing to do with Amazon putting together a diverse cast, and everything to do with Amazon making the cast’s diversity more important than the story being told.
There aren’t Black Elves. That would be like creating Black Caucasians. There aren’t Dwarf Queens. Dwarf women were rarely even seen, and only one was named by Tolkien. These additions aren’t sincere. All they’re doing is pandering to people who are doing nothing but checking boxes while having zero regard for the story being told.
To be pissed about the direction they’re taking here isn’t bigotry—it’s righteous indignation towards the bastardization of a story that means the world to millions around the globe, including myself.
Sure, it may end up being a fun fantasy series, but I can guarantee you it won’t truly represent the Middle Earth that Tolkien built, and it won’t be something that honors his legacy.

Yeah. Sure it’s because of reaching as many audiences as possible but it seems they care much more about this broad appeal apparently as they do about the actual story
There are ways to include diversity. But this way is about as lazy as it gets and what a lot of corporations do.

Stop with this "lazy" angle. It's not lazy. It is a cold and calculated effort to destroy any and all cultural and social institutions of Western culture. Calling it lazy gives them the cover of being just bumbling but well-intentioned idiots. They're not. This is exactly what they have set out to do decades ago.
Posted on 2/25/22 at 1:36 pm to SoFla Tideroller
It is lazy because they’re taking the easiest way out in creating whatever their goal is. Whether it be what you’re saying or just corporate pandering.

It’s also hilarious that they secretly value black contributions so little that the best they can think to do is “here, play this role meant for a white person”.
It’s literally “hey find somewhere to stick this person”

There are two viewpoints on situations like this and it's apparent in this thread
#1 (Pure consumers)- why do you care about race/gender changes. It doesn't affect the story and it gives everyone a chance to see themselves in it. You're racist
#2 (Pure fandom)- we love *insert fictional universe* as is and it was created the way it is for a purpose. People of all walks of life already like it, why change it? The creators
fundamentally don't understand what they're working with.
a non-race example is like the upcoming Halo show. They're taking Chief's helmet off and having him talk emotionally. The creators don't understand the nuances of the character. He struggles with his humanity/being a machine. It completely changes the character.
With this LOTR, if you're going to make fundamental changes, you should just go ahead and make a brand new fantasy show and do whatever you want instead of shitting on quite possibly the biggest and most intelligent fanbase there is.

This is the crux of the biscuit. Black actors were forced into the story because their only intention was to put black actors in the story. It's diversity for diversity's sake, otherwise known as tokenism. It's racism on its face, but Hollywood loves to do this while they fellate themselves for being virtuous.

All of this.
Also, I've never quite seen any poster get absolutely eviscerated on any board since I've been here since 2006 as badly as Sammy has in this thread. The guy must just be a masochist.
