Yes but now we must discuss Inter-elf privilege

Think of any property you loved in movies, tv, games, etc. And I promise you those characters and stories will be butchered for LGBTQ and "I want characters who look like me" B.S.
This is something I will never understand. I'm disabled, and grew up with both my mom and younger sister (no pics) as disabled as well, and I've never once watched anything and thought they didn't represent me. I will never understand the argument that someone has to look like, or " represent", you for you to care about the property.
ETA: that is one of the reasons I am so wary of what seems to be the wokification of Tolkien with this series. I want to love it but I have concerns.

Well done!
Secondly, you're obviously correct. This very new idea that the only way to truly connect with a story is for it to be about someone that is more superficially like yourself is absurd. If this was true, most of classic fiction would have never had an audience because most people could not have seen themselves in one aspect or another of the characters in it. Which is actually a counter to Sammy's point, which assumes that these activists are doing something which only amounts to window dressing by race swapping characters. If that was true, there would not also be the argument that it has to be done in order for entire swaths of people to even enjoy the stories. It's can't be both.

You should be more than wary. It's with a 100% certainty that they're doing this, and we know this because they've announced it every turn. From their own DEI policy which they proudly list on their website, to firing the first Tolkien scholar who is actually respected and would have attempted to keep them honest and replacing him with a woke activist, to the showrunners declaring they wanted to alter the universe towards inclusivity, and amazon trotting out this "super fan" horse shite to gaslight fans into giving it a shot.
quote:
I want to love it but I have concerns.
And this is where most of the issues lie. Personally, I'm a normie when it comes to Tolkien. I've read Hobbit a bunch of times but never read LOTR or any of the other work. I love the Jackson movies (not The Hobbit which mostly was horrendous) and watch the Extended Version blu rays once a year probably. But I'm a fan, and I'm a bigger fan of other IP's which have also had this treatment. It drives me nuts that this things have all be taken by activists whose only concern is utilizing the framework of these already popular IPs in order to drape their own ideology onto it. They don't love the stories or the characters as written. They love the opportunity to spread their world view using them, and they also seem to enjoy destroying things which people that disagree with them have enjoyed their whole life. So my interest here is mostly from an outsider who is tired of seeing these things bastardized. I'm one of these crazed weirdos that want adaptations to remain true, in all aspects, to the source materials from which they are taken.
I post this guy's stuff a lot, but I think he's 100% correct when he explains that it's just time to let these things go. They are just dangling keys in front of fans in the hopes to get them excited based on their desire to to give it a shot, knowing deep down they changed everything about what they loved. It's why they always have articles written and in the chamber from access media ready to rebut the inevitable fan criticisms.
Why They Do It

It’s dumb. I’m taller than 95% of actors. Oh no! Where are all the tall people!?
My daughter is disabled. Oh no, where is the cerebral palsy representation?!

Watched Rain Man last weekend with our 14 year old and was immediately struck with the fact that there is no way Dustin Hoffman could have played that role today. And since it would have been impossible to cast an autistic man with as severe a disability as he played in the movie, we'd have never gotten that movie on screen.

You’re exactly right. I mean, sure I want LOTR to be awesome too. I hope it is. But I can hope in one hand and shite in another and see what happens.
There’s just no way they don’t make this suck. We just saw how Amazon aborted Wheel of Time. No real reason to think this won’t also suck.

Sammy is not a troll. He is a well-meaning but far left poster who supports critical race theory, for example, Bc he believes black kids (and only black kids) “learn differently.”

Yeah, this is something that I think some people don't get. If you're a fan of something, why would you WANT it to suck? You hear that all the time...this accusation that we just want it to suck. Fans are invested and want more than anything for the things they love to be respected and treated well and to make them love it even more. The reason fans of all of these IPs have been pissed now for years is that the opposite has been happening, and when fans have the audacity to attempt to gatekeep the franchises and tell creators, "Hey...you're fricking up these things we love," creators immediately defend their work not by trying to get fan on board, but by name calling fans and attempting to gaslight their real concerns.
I hate that I'm having to walk away for so many of these things, but it's beyond evident that these companies and creators do not deserve my benefit of the doubt and only want me as a fan if I'll shut up and pay them even as they destroy these things I once loved.

And the correct response to this garbage IS to walk away.
Without respect, we reject.
The main reason this will suck is because they didn't respect the source material or the lore.
Bezos wanted his 'Game of Thrones' and saw an established IP as his means of getting it.
Geroge Martin still hasn't finished HIS saga, fwiw. Probably never will either.

This video was all sortof funny. First influencers? A bunch of no name influencer is more like it.
Funniest part that stuck out to me was black girl trying to give black cred by hyping up fricking Galadriel of all people.
"That's my girl Galadriel!!" and the "whoop whoop" motions.
Yeah no...
I wasn't surprise about the Sauron comment. I knew they were gonna make Sauron gay base on the literal wording of Tolkien books taken out of context.
First Tolkien describe him as beautiful and how he seduced the kings of Numenor to ruin.
WE ALL know that it just mean he look noble and offer power to greedy kings.
But nope, those Amazon count decided to make it literal so Sauron will be arse fricking or getting arse fricked by some Numenorean men and cornuted that way.
Hence why the gay guy phrase of wanting to love Sauron and redeem him.

I mean, I was. Do you know who Sauron is and what he’s done? While fans knew he had an alluring manner, LotR fans have never thought of him in a sexual manner. I’m sorry, just everything Sauron is, he is not remotely a sex symbol even in his most alluring form.

This song dropped today. It is a cover of Enya's May It Be from The Lord of the Rings. The Dark Side Of The Moon do covers of songs, mostly from the realm of fantasy shows. The other song they have released is a cover of Jenny of Oldstones from Game of Thrones. The main singer is Melissa Bonny, a swiss metal vocalist whose main band is Ad Infinitum. I figured some of you people might appreciate it.

I mean, it's pretty explictly stated that Elves are the oldest, truest and most beautiful of Eru's creation ON ARDA. They're basically gods, never truly die and are the wisest and fairest beings in creation, and hold magical abilities that others cannot attain and hail from the equivalent of Mt Olympus.
However, man (Eru's other direct creation) have the ultimate privilege.... The true spiritual afterlife of the great beyond, which the Elves can never enter the great beyond... So who's really privelaged here?

OK saw this today and thought of this thread so I thought I'd add it. This is Chris Gore, who is known for Attack of the Show back in the day, and has done some producing, writing, directing, etc. Not exactly some MAGA hat earing guy.
What he is mostly is a fan of movies, and especially sci-fi and fantasy stuff...
He had some takes on the Amazon LOTR show, which don't really mention the race swapping but hints at it and other changes based on his desire to keep Tolkien's work as he intended it.
Good little 10 minute video.
How to alienate fans
