I want to repost this quote from Tolkien as a reminder to assholes like Sammy who think they’re entitled to ruin a franchise I’m engaged in but you’re too big of a fricking hack to make one of your own so you have to destroy a great one to make it work. He likes taking Tolkien out context (which still doesn’t work in his favor), so I will now quote Tolkien in context:

quote:

Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made.

Name a time when diversity has been a driving force for a film based on beloved characters and it turned out good. I'm not talking about just changing a few characters. I'm talking about so important that they had their "superfans" tell us how important it is.

Wanna explain how a subterranean race gets exposed to so much sun that they genetically produce high amounts of melanin?

It’s not that black characters are in. It’s that they are completely ignoring the lore in ways that makes zero sense. They just throw people in there on a quota.

Do stories with stuff like Baranor, a Gondorian captain of Haradrim birth, which would be black in modern context.

Characters from Rhun for Asia, Middle East. Etc.

This is the biggest problem with the whole deal. They could have easily added diversity into the story in exactly the ways you mention without destroying what Tolkien created. Choosing not to do so shows a complete lack of respect for him and the source material.

the Mandalorian has a very diverse cast and it’s great.

All the beloved character are still white in this one. Elrond, Galadriel, Isildur, the dwarves kings.

Lol, you’re throwing out a series you’ve never watched because of some black characters but you’re defending ketchup on steak.

No taste.

You do know that diversity casting in the LOTR show is little more than Hollywood tokenism, right?

If all they wanted to do was sell books online well they wouldn’t have become one of the biggest companies on earth.

As is they do a lot of things well.

The hardest part will be writing a good show.
It’s easy to hire a diverse cast. There are good black actors out there.

And there are also good writers and good casting directors . They don’t have to be the same person.

Yeah but Star Wars by definition is diverse. LOST thrived because it was diverse, but it was that from the onset. If it makes sense to be diverse like those two, then go for it. If you’re shoving it in like this version of Lord of the Rings then it’s going to suck.

Everyone. This is a good example of just how dishonest or stupid of a person we are dealing with. Read the posts leading up to this and then read this.

Exactly. Star Wars is built upon the notion of hyper-accessible travel. Some planets are metro-hubs of diverse populations. Some are ethno-states. It’s all clearly explained.

How many character in the first Star Wars movie were POC?

There were 50 types of aliens and 1 type
Of human. (And Darth Vader’s voice)

I do love how Sammy is trying to pass himself off as a Lord of the Rings fan. I’m sorry, but Tolkien fans are very dedicated and talk in a very specific manner. It is obvious Sammy hasn’t read Tolkien and sure as shite isn’t a fan of his. We can sniff that out in a single sentence if someone is a Lord of the Rings fan or not. It wouldn’t take long with him since he can’t answer how many Rings of Power there are, but he thinks he can deceive. frick you Sammy. We see you for the rat you are.

You specifically stated earlier that seeing someone that looks like you mattered. The person you responded to specifically said seeing someone that represents him that he could identify with would be cool.
I find it odd that some people can only identify with someone in film if they are the same race.

For example I identified with Theo Huxtable growing up even though I’m white. His upbringing was very close to mine. Likewise I couldn’t identify with the 90210 people because their lifestyle was nothing like mine.

If you have to see someone on screen with the same skin color to identify with them then your take on life and the world is very narrow.

All that said changing the race of classic literary figures adds nothing. Also when that happens these virtue signaling writers will then write the character differently like they always do. This takes away from the story’s canon and thus pisses off the fans.

Characters aren’t interesting because they are black. They’re interesting because they are interesting

He specifically responded to me. I didn't say that seeing someone that represents me and I could identify with would be cool. What I said was:
quote:

Truth be told, I rarely see people like me in films. That would be something new.

That comment has absolutely nothing to do with being a white conservative. He made an assumption about me that is wildly off target. What the comment means is in plain sight, but he missed it.

It was doomed when they fired Tom Shippey. That’s how I know it won’t respect Tolkien’s work.

Downvote has no clue who Shippey is & why his firing is important.

I apologize for misquoting you. I agree with all your points. The point I was trying to make is Sammy mostly believes in order for him to be able to identify with a character they have to be black because for him race is the ultimate determining factor in who he is as a person. People not so obsessed with race as the ultimate defining factor can see commonality in characters such as similar personalities, goals, upbringing etc.

This was a given. They hate everything Tolkien cared about... Christianity, virtue, honor, etc.

They despise the very existence of these things.
