The Mad Max movies are up there. So are the Lethal Weapon movies. Fast and the Furious, John Wick.

Both fantastic movie trilogies but the differences between the Lord of the Rings and Leone's Dollar Trilogy are almost hilarious. Subject matter, cji or not, Clint, Eli and Lee van Cleef vs. Frodo, etc.

POTC

Is not a trilogy. You simply cannot include them because of the added characters and story lines accessed in PotC 4 & 5 that other trilogies cant flesh out within 3 movies

Same goes for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Matrix, etc

1) Godfather
2) LotR
3) Back to the Future
4) Dark Knight
5) Spider-man
6) Mad Max

I don’t know.. TOD was meh for me sandwiched between two great movies.

i watched TOD not too long ago and it’s really an interesting stylistic movie

It’s intentionally way campier to totally it stands out from the other 2 but it does achieve its goals of being this campy pulpy adventure movie.

The original is good. I saw one of the 2 sequels in the original trilogy in the theater and It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I think it was the final one.

The original is downright awesome; Hollywood needs to get back to making fun films like that without any ridiculous undertones. The next 2 were awful and I didn’t even bother with the following 2.

First you need to define trilogy. We should probably stick to true narrative trilogies and not consider the like of the Dollars Trilogy, Three Flavours Cornetto, etc. because that opens it up to considering any 3 movies with an actor and director in common. Hell, let's put together Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglorious Basterds.

Hard to ignore Godfather as the top spot due to it containing what many consider 2 all-time top 5 movies. Three was a pretty good drop off, but the first two were simply fantastic.

LOTR is my personal favorite and did not contain a true weak link.

Several others mentioned could be considered for #3, but to me POTC is not among them. The first one was great but the sequels were not close to the same level. Same for the Matrix. I loved the first, but the sequels although entertaining, did not hold up.

Another great first, followed by ok sequels (at least the first few) was Die Hard.

Alien/Aliens were both great, but 3 sucked pretty bad. Same with Terminator.

The first 3 Toy Story movies were fantastic and perhaps it belongs at #3.

Nostalgia weighs heavy here. I went back to watch Road Warrior a few years ago and forgot how frickING BORING the first 60 minutes of that movie are.

If they had stopped at The Last Crusade, Indiana Jones is easily top 4

Why whatever do you mean? To my knowledge they are and forever will be only 3 Indiana Jones movies.

LOTR is the clear #1

The Godfather trilogy is the clear #1. Despite the third installment. When two of your movies are in the debate for greatest movie of all time, then it's the greatest trilogy of all time. And I LOVE the Lord of the Rings.

Lord of the Rings is clear #2 for me but I could see an argument for the original Star Wars over it.

Pirates of the Caribbean is not even close to the top 2, also it's not even a trilogy

Nolan's Batman and Back to the Future are miles ahead of Pirates as well.

LOTR will always be number 1 until someone can come in and capture that perfection and magic.

Agreed.

I would disagree with Star Wars. Everyone separates the nine movies into three different trilogies and it took actual decades for more movies to come out. Pirates of the Caribbean 4 came out just a few years after 3 and had the same lead. Completely different situations.

Pretty much just a trilogy in name only; there's no connective story, just the same principal actors.

At first glance, the only thing that came to mind was Passion of The Christ. Man...they made 3 of those? You saw him get crucified. You saw him rose from the dead. Now...see him kick some Jewish arse!! Passion of the Christ 3: The Reckoning. Pontius Pilate won't be able to wash his hands of what's coming. Today I'll forgive your sins, tomorrow I'll make you pay.
