IIRC, Alabama tried and failed to get Planning last year. Wasn't he their first choice?

Brian Hartline (OSU) Somebody is going to roll the dice on this guy.

I wouldn’t. He’s a great wr coach and recruiter but his OC skills are meh and he’s already at his alma mater. Would be in his best interest to stay right there.

Me neither. I’m sure he likes the idea of coaching college football, but doesn’t want to deal with the reality. Plus there is that whole lawsuit against the NFL going on so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s blacklisted by most big ADs.

Surprised no one has mentioned Lashley at SMU. SMU is a pretty attractive job with its resources, but you know these coaches want to work in front of a big time atmosphere.

as far as Dan Lanning, he would be a fool to leave Oregon. Willamette Valley is gorgeous, elite facilities, elite NIL, and 1/10th of the stress SEC head coaches have. People here couldn't care less.

Charles Huff at USM would be a tremendous hire.

Oregon is an apex program.

You would think, but their last 2 had coaches left for other schools. Taggart for Florida State and Cristobal for Miami.

Pre-NIL and portal when geographic location was much more important than it is now.

Oregon is in a different position now vs then because you can pay players in this era and they have a blank check.

What’s with this alma mater shite? I have seen it several times. If an ambitious coach is offered significantly more money and resources by another program, there’s a good chance he will leave. Now if he is wanted by other programs that obviously means he has been successful and he may want to play the long game and sit on the goodwill he’s earned in a volatile profession instead of starting over elsewhere with everything to prove and a shorter leash. That goes for coaches at their alma mater or not.

But just as schools frequently fire the shite out of alumni, alumni will leave for greener pastures too.

No one - not football coaches, not insurance salesmen, not stockbrokers - cares as much about a school as their livelihood.

I'll kind of say I think everyone is available for the right price. If LSU came calling to Ryan Day and offered him $15 million a year, he's thinking about it. If USC does the same for Kirby he's at least considering it.

We are in this age where we have hundreds of millions sunk into teams so you need to be willing to pay up for the top coaches.

It's a strange place to be

My thinking is that it probably matters a lot more for coaches who are mid-tier and being targeted by other mid-tier schools or for coordinator positions at larger schools.

Obviously you can throw enough money at a guy to make him leave anywhere, but being alumni is not nothing. Gundy (for example) had opportunities to leave OSU after 2011 but stayed.

I don't know why, but I see his next stop being at Tulane or Memphis before he gets a power job.

How quickly we forget he had everything you could ever want at UF and still failed.
He was 34-15 and 21-14 in the SEC. In the 3 seasons he finished he was ranked 6, 7, and 12 at the end of the year

He would have made the playoffs 2/4 years. Florida would sacrifice a human for that “failing” right now

Depends on the alma mater and the situation. Hartline isn’t leaving his alma mater to be the next HC at another Big Ten school. Would he go to another instate school like Toledo or Akron or Ohio to be the HC? Maybe, but honestly, why would he? They aren’t going to pay you much more if any more than you get paid now, the situation is much more difficult than what you currently deal with, so why take that leap? Some guys are just meant to be positional coaches and coordinators. Ellis Johnson was an incredible DC for us at South Carolina and was great as a DC at other stops. He was complete arse as a HC.

Alma maters do matter, but situation also matters too.

How many coaches have stayed at less prestigious programs and weren’t an alumnus?

When you win enough to attract bigger jobs, you know you can win where you’re at and you have built equity that can give you the benefit of the doubt in tough times. Once you leave, success (at least relatively speaking) is less certain and the new program doesn’t care about anything you did before. It’s not an insignificant consideration.

At the end of the day, a coach - like all professionals - is going to do what’s best for himself and his family.
