Tennis is pretty much all automated now. Umpire is just there for show. The US open last year did fully automated line calling

i know that i am wrong on a molecular level, but i think that machine gets things wrong a bit. not always or mostly, but a bit.

but of the major sports, tennis and golf. i have seen a tennis umpire or line judge ruin something for a player before (serena's outburst.)

actually agree that Baseball gives the least amount of control of the outcome to officials of the major team sports

An ump can fix a game just by how he calls the strike zone…

Golf is interesting because, when playing for fun, the enforcement of the USGA Rules of Golf is dependent solely on the "honorable" behavior and character of the golfers.

I really think pro golf and pro tennis are the best examples here, in addition to certain track and field events.

As long as the ump calls the strike zone both ways, it’s not a big deal.

A baseball ump has three different calls to make during a game. “Ball/Strike, Safe/Out, Fair/Foul”

In baseball you don’t hit a HR then look back and see a penalty flag thrown during the play.

I'm glad that more and more American Football fans are realizing that the Officials all too often will decide who wins the game.

True, but if an ump puts you in a 0-2 hole, you won't see a pitch for the rest of that at-bat that you can drive anywhere near a home run.

That’s a reflection of the NFLs parity…

Probably tennis. The ref doesn't even really need to exist anymore. The lines are electronic.

Football - refs can call penalties to move teams up and down the field and get them in scoring position

Basketball - refs can call ticky tack falls to get players to the FT line for free points

Baseball - inconsistent strike zone can get baserunners aboard

Hockey - send a guy to the penalty box for a couple minutes, but the kicker is the team at the disadvantage on players can now ice the puck without repercussions to waste time.

Hockey is definitely the sport (at least in the major 4 NA leagues) where try as they might the refs have the least influence. And the NHL has the best postseason of the 4 major sports as well.

In light of last night obviously. Football officials can pick out a holding call or defensive interference on any play and get away with it. Pretty substantial in a league like the NFL where anyone can beat anyone one. Pretty sure basketball officials just make up fouls. Soccer has gotten better since VAR arrived in most leagues, but calling for a penalty kick is one of the most powerful calls in officiating. Don't know enough about baseball or hockey.

Any sports that don't involve in gambling.

One of the reasons the NHL is my second favorite sport (soon to be favorite) is because officials can't tilt games as often. Even if they do, a power play doesn't guarantee a score for the team that isn't short handed. A lot harder to work a puck into the net from the refs as opposed to working a team down the field for football. Refs in football can literally escort a team into the end zone when they please.

All of this. Hockey can survive a poor ref call better than the other big 3.
