Golf,……you rely on line judges a lot

Not near as much as other sports. You can go whole rounds without talking to a rules official in a golf tournament

Nah. Judges in tennis are there for show, literally. Players challenge spots all the time during a match, and that has been automated for a long time now. They keep "control" of the match by announcing the scores now and make obvious calls. Close ones get reviewed and that is done quickly.

At the big tournaments they aren’t even reviewed. Every line call is made by an instant read by a computer. The official simply shouts “out” when the computer signals it

Basically the only thing being officiated by a human in tennis anymore are foot faults

Track & Field

The stopwatch and tape measure don't lie.

There are judgement calls on blocking etc in distance events that can be highly subjective and controversial but generally a good one

so not that one

If an umpire has a huge strike zone and is giving the hitter no breaks, the hitter has the option to swing at balls just outside the strike zone. You really can't not engage on the line of scrimmage

golf, tennis, track & field, swimming, down hill skiing. really any timed racing event or any event measuring something (distance, weight, etc.) in any sport has very little official involvement

Team sports, hard to say. I'd say soccer probably has less than any of the other major team sports comparatively

Golf is probably the most unique in that officials aren't even there unless their assistance is requested and/or a complaint is made and they're reviewing something retroactively. Only sport I can think of where the players penalize themselves and the players self-police for the most part.

There’s that. There’s also the Out/Safe calls which can change everything and no other sport allows refs to just toss out players or coaches for yelling at them for making a bad call. At worse, there are penalties for it in other sports, but just tossing an HC or a starter for getting mad? That gives umps more power than you’d see elsewhere.

Are we arguing that the out/safe call is intentional or unintentional in changing the outcome or just the amount of control the umpire has in theory? If a guy rakes at the plate, it doesn't give the opportunity for the umpire to make the bad call.

Angel Hernandez videos on YouTube. Go watch what one notably bad umpire can do to games with just one call.

While I totally agree that Angel Hernandez might be the single worst game official/ref/ump in sports history, and has affected the outcome of countless games, he is also borderline retarded meaning he could not grasp the concept of a coordinated thought process needed to willfully cheat.

there are certain instances where judgement calls need to be made (impeding in distance events, false starts, fouls on long/triple jumps and throws, etc.) but usually issues with that are few and far between.

Of the major team sports, baseball game outcomes are the least that are decided subjectively, IMO

Instant replay has helped tremendously on the bases, and the electronic strike zone will do the same for the plate

And baseball has also handled off the field bullshite better than the other sports.

It is the last remaining team sport that I have remained intellectually invested in at the professional level.

It’s still far better than basketball or football. Golf and tennis are sports sure but it’s hard to compare them to basketball and football
