This is the only acceptable situation. If you move cities it’s ok to be a fan of your new hometown.

As others have said, it sounds like he was just a casual Hornets/Pelicans fan, so I wouldn’t give him too hard of a time. My friend used to be a Twins fan (I don’t know how) living in the South, but became a Royals fan when he moved to the Midwest (yes, before they finally got good). I asked him about this, but I guess he was just a casual fan back then. I didn’t give him a hard time over it though. I’ll always be a die hard for my teams regardless of where I move.

I grew up a fan of my local team up north, but lived on La for about ten years and fell in love with the Pels

That seems fine to me. If you move to a new town, especially a place like OKC, it's highly likely you'll adapt that team.

Out here in Cali you'll find tons of people that root for SC during football season, then turn around and root for UCLA during basketball season. Now that deserves ridicule.

Or if the team moves cities. When the Oilers moved I didn’t automatically become a Titans fan.

He got a job in Oklahoma City a few years ago and since then has jumped totally on board with the Thunder. Some of our mutual friends give him shite about it but I’m a bit torn on the issue.

Not ok.

Nobody should be allowed to be a Thunder fan until the Sonics return to Seattle.

I'd say that's more acceptable for professional teams you root for than college.

As others have pointed out, living somewhere a long time or something like that seems to be OK for a person to start rooting for a local team. Another case I can think of is if ownership doesn't give a frick about winning or its fans - I don't have a problem at all with a fan walking away from that franchise and choosing another team to follow.

I'd have a much bigger problem with someone changing college teams to root for, especially if a person went to the damn school that he or she is choosing to abandon.

When players start taking a knee during the National Anthem.

I think it’s acceptable to switch fan bases when you live in that team’s city for a few years
This is my case. I used to be in Red Wings country and grew up when they were dominating, but I didn’t really get into hockey until I moved to Columbus. I still appreciate Detroit, but it’s all Blue Jackets for me now.

don't forget playing for a different team than you rooted for growing up

Or in college, where your kids go.

In HS sports, demographic changes are a reason. An old white guy might look terribly out of place at a football game for his alma mater at some places.

at this point, being fan of either should be unacceptable

I started out phila warriors.

They moved to sf.

I moved to Chicago, went to games, saw on TV.

Beautiful ball. A hofer forward. Chet walker.
A hofer defender and hard nosed player, Sloan.

I became bulls fan.

By and by moved to sf.
Just missed Rick Barry Jamal Wilkes champ run.

Decades later, I'm a sf/Oakland fan.

Being in a place qualifies.

Was simultaneously Larry Bird fan wherever I was.
Fwiw Celtics were the monster when I was in Phillie.

From Houston and have been in Denver for over 12 yrs. Even though I enjoy going to games because I’m a fan of the sports and enjoy game atmospheres, frick the Rockies, Broncos, and Nuggets. I’m an Htown fan through the good times, bad times, and at all times.

I am however an Avs fan. No Htown NHL team obviously.

I have a friend who lived in the Bay Area for 6 months right before this Warriors fun of the last few years. He has been supporting the Death Star. Needless to say, all of us Houston guys loathe this part of him. He’s from a town in Texas without major teams, so he was always a player follower fan. Which I also hate.

I was one of these for the NFL between the Oilers and Texans eras.
