Probably not but it would have been a better game than Nebraska gave them. As an LSU fan though, not complaining because LSU wasn't beating Florida in Atlanta and that 01 SEC title and Sugar Bowl win meant a lot to us coming off of that awful 90s decade of LSU football.

His teams were overrated.
People were wowed by his Fun & Gun beating bad teams by 80.
Nebraska exposed their horrible defense.
Spurrier admitted that Nebraska sent him back to the drawing board and made him realize he needed a much more physical defense if they were ever going to hang with the likes of that Nebraska team.

FSU, Miami and the rest of the sec. The SEC benefited from FSU and Miami softening up through the mid-2000s and beyond. I know FSU and Miami had a few good teams in there but nothing like they had prior to that.

People also forget just how bad Florida was historically before he took over there. Stoops was a huge hit too as their defense just was not the same once he left and his offensive style needed certain types of defensive coaches.

Teammate of mine from HS was a highly rated recruit who spurned Florida to sign with a different SEC school. Spurrier lost his shite at the guy’s mom at a K and B over it, saying he would never be on television there.

World class FSU and Miami teams. 
For all that tough luck, they did catch some good fortune when Arizona State shite the bed in the Rose Bowl. Without that Spurrier probably never gets an NC.

There was no room for error back then. You not only had to go undefeated or at most have 1 loss but you had to get the right matchup in your bowl game and hope another unbeaten didn’t get a favorable matchup in theirs if you didn’t meet up. Florida being in the SEC had more bullets to dodge than a Michigan or a Nebraska or a FSU so there were a lot of situational hurdles that don’t exist now for Spurrier in that era. People who witnessed that era can tell you nobody was more feared in college football and nobody could blow your doors off like Florida. Not saying they were overall better than those other elite teams of that era but they were more scary.

Florida ended the annual rivalry with Miami after the 1987 season. The only time Spurrier ever faced Miami was the 2000 Sugar Bowl. But he did have the fortune of playing LSU every season in the worst decade of the program’s history.

My dad used to say LSU Coach Nick Saban made Spurrier leave for the NFL..

Poor defense when it mattered most.
It took a mulligan rematch and implementing the shotgun in the postseason in 1996 to get the one championship he did win.

It absolutely does not detract from his greatness- there were other great teams and the SEC had not yet entered its 20+ year dominant stage.
