Few things:

1. He only had elite defenses the few years stoops was there
2. Because of the defensive issues, fsu, Nebraska and Miami were generally better 3. Somewhat bad luck with timing (eg. ran into the GOAT team in 95 without stoops) in an era when it was harder to win and no margin for error

It wasn't QB talent as someone said earlier. It was QB management. Wuerffel was the only one he trusted. And it took a few years for that to even happen. He was in every single one of those QB's heads.

I remember going into the Auburn Florida game in 1994, Spurrier was publicly warning Terry Dean he better not throw interceptions like he did the week before. I think Dean and Wuerffel combined threw 3-4 interceptions.

Spurrier admitted that Nebraska sent him back to the drawing board and made him realize he needed a much more physical defense if they were ever going to hang with the likes of that Nebraska team.

Spurrier tried multiple times to hire Bill Oliver as his DC it just didn't work out for several reasons.

As an LSU fan though, not complaining because LSU wasn't beating Florida in Atlanta and that 01 SEC title and Sugar Bowl win meant a lot to us coming off of that awful 90s decade of LSU football.

Probably not, but the LSU offense was humming at the time. It would’ve been interesting to see them get another shot at UF with a healthy Rohan.
IIRC, had LSU lost the SECCG they would have played OU in the Cotton Bowl.

The 1998 UF team had the nastiest defense in the Spurrier era.

Except when they played Kentucky; Craig Yeast torched them. Florida had the better team, but Yeast was the best player on the field that game. It pissed Spurrier off, and two years later, he threw a bomb in the final seconds because he was pissed that Kentucky torched them again. He HATED Hal Mumme.

Spurrier had some crappy luck as others mentioned (95,98,01). They were just below NC level in 90-93,97 and 00. 94 was choke-at-Doak.

Florida vs FSU in the 90’s was the peak rivalry in any era of college football. Every single game was a matchup of top 10 teams and I believe 5 of them were top 5.

Florida won the SEC 6 times in 10 years. If that doesn’t make you feared across the conference, Idk what does

Terry Dean was literally undrafted. Between the cfl and afl he amassed a whopping 178 passing yards over 3 seasons. That's not on spurrier mismanagement, that's lack of talent.

Spurrier kept trotting him out there when he had Wuerrfel.

3. Somewhat bad luck

I would consider it good luck. They fricked up against FSU and the stars aligned for a rematch for the national title.

UF was probably the best team in 1996. I wouldn’t argue against that. However, it was hardly a clear thing. FSU, ASU, and OSU were strong too, and Nebraska was a style nightmare.

There’s not any other years I think Florida was the best team under Spurrier.

With or without Stoops, they just weren’t very studly on D that season and were a poor matchup against the Huskers. This is 1995 Florida’s starting defense with draft slots.

LE) Johnie Church: 7th/1996
LT) David Barnard: Undrafted
RT) Ed Chester: Undrafted
RE) Mark Campbell: 3rd/1996
LB) Dexter Daniels: 6th/1996
LB) James Bates: Undrafted
LB) Ben Hanks: Undrafted
CB) Anthone Lott: Undrafted
CB) Fred Weary: 4th/1997
SS) Lawrence Wright: Undrafted
FS) Teako Briwn: Undrafted

Not exactly 2021 UGA.

Tommie Frazier played three games against defenses with a first round draft pick on D the following spring. Rushes 33 times for 143 yards and 0 TD’s against them. Rushes for 199 yards (a career high by 41 yards) and 2 TD’s on 16 carries against the Gators.

Winning a title is really hard.

And sometimes harder before BCS (sometimes easier).

In 1996, Florida OSU, FSU, ASU and BYU all finished with 1 loss. Going into bowls, FSU and ASU were undefeated. UF and OSU beat previously undefeated teams in bowl games. Seems like that would have been a perfect 4 team playoff year honestly

UF would have likely won more than 1 if the playoff existed. But they one they won you could argue wasn't "unanimous" although they were more than deserving

Florida had a great run in the 1990s, but the most feared team? I wouldn’t go that far.

your older age must be clouding your memory. Florida under spurrier had the same aura around them as saban's bama teams. Most teams lost before the game even started because of the mental hurdle of knowing what they were up against.

shite like 'most feared' is so subjective and literally impossible to measure so nobody is going to be completely right on this. But as for SEC teams go, I don't see how you could possibly argue for any other team besides them, and as for nationally you'd have to think they were one of the top 3 "most feared" teams of the decade alongside FSU and Nebraska. Of course Miami had some stellar squads too but they also had some complete stinkers (including a losing season) in the mid-late 90s which FL never did.

What do you think Danny's 93 and 94 stats looked like? I remember they were as shitty as Terry's.

Bahahaha!

Saban’s teams won six national titles - and would knock your dick in the dirt with NFL ready talent everywhere.

Well, I was right there in the middle of it in 1999 when we beat Florida in the Swamp and smoked them in the SECCG.

I don’t recall anyone being scared. No one is scared to have the ball thrown around the yard on them.

ND wasn’t standing in the tunnel before the 2013 national championship and watching guys like Chance Warmack run by and worry about somebody running a post route on them. They were worried about someone trampling their arse.

Spurrier’s teams didn’t strike that kind of fear in teams.

oing to be completely right on this. But as for SEC teams go

don't believe i ever compared their resumes did I?

yes you've referenced this several times. What you're doing is akin to a clemson fan saying "psh, beating saban/bama at the height of their dynasty is nothign. We did it multiple times. Y'all think it's hard or something?" Just because bama beat florida twice that year doesn't make the overall point any less valid.

Maybe not. Perhaps they're "scared' of losign by 30+ though as spurrier's opponents tended to do.

so only one specific type of ball elicits fear into opponents, do I have your main point correct here ?

I would have thought he would have had more success in the NFL. He played in the league for 10 years. His offense could have worked in the NFL, but as others said he wasn't really into it, but you have so many more assistants in the NFL and analysts do you have to do the Dick Vermeil thing anymore?
