More importantly that game was pretty much peak CFB:
-Both teams had NFL level defenses
-You had Saban in Tuscaloosa against his old program
-The buildup was unlike anything in recent history with the hype and atmosphere
-The game itself was evenly matched and it had the suspense of one play making the difference
I’ve been to a number of NC games and not all of them had the aura of that one.

Two that I was in the stadiums for:
Tulane -LSU 1982
TCU-Baylor 2014. TCU was up 58-37 with 11 minutes left and physically dominating the game. Baylor scored 24 straight points, the last on a FG as the clock ran out to win the game 61-58. The team picture next year right in the middle of the front row, 61 sat next to 58. Classic Troll job

Sometimes an iconic play can obscure the fact that everything before that was awesome too. We remember a single moment but forget everything else that led up to it.
Examples: Flutie Hail Mary, Kick 6, Boise St Statue of Liberty, Stanford Band is on the field, Bush Push, etc...
Those were all amazing games that still would have been great without the famous ending.

It gets lost in the shuffle with the playoffs now being all that really matters, but the 2024 Alabama vs Georgia game had everything you could ever want.
Georgia comes in as top ranked favorites. Alabama races out to 28-0 lead. Georgia storms all the way back and takes the lead inside of 3 minutes. Alabama scores an 80+ yard touchdown on their next play. Georgia drives the field and has a shot to the end zone that's intercepted to seal the win for Alabama.
It was peak crazy college football in an electric prime time atmosphere

Best one I've been to is UT/OSU 2005. Vince Young vs AJ Hawk and Bobby Carpenter and the best defense in the country in 2005. Troy Smith was coming off a suspension for taking $500 from a booster (crazy where we are now) so he was splitting time at QB. UT dominated the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of the game and OSU really won the middle 40. 2 minutes left VY completed this ball to Sweed that was barely in the corner of endzone

Has anyone brought up 2008 Texas Tech vs. Texas?
#7 Tech got up 22-6
#1 Texas came all the way back and were up 33-32 with 8 seconds left
Then the Crabtree catch happened
ETA: I hope #12 for Texas lost his scholarship in the film room for this, dude just gave up on the play

Correct. In essence, 2010 was the last season that in which winning a regular season game meant something in CFB.
The slogan "Every Game Counts" was IMMEDIATELY dropped by ESPN after the wrong team won the "game of the century".
Once the rematch was announced, the game was made irrelevant, at least from the perspective of the winning team.

1971 Nebraska doesn’t get enough love in GOAT discussions on this board. One reason is they played 55 years ago, which is understandable. The other reason is they matched up in one close game against one of OU’s best teams of all time (and maybe the best wishbone team of all time) while 1995 Nebraska coasted against the worst OU team in 30 years.
Most people lack that context when scanning and comparing scores. Style points are a little easier when your archrival (who generally had your number in big games) is at rock bottom.
People often wonder what happened to Nebraska. Well, I can tell you three things that robbed the program’s momentum heading into the 21st century.
1. The creation of the Big 12. Nebraska lost key games to Texas in 1996 and 1999 that cost them the opportunity to at least play for a national title. They didn’t have to frick with Texas in the Big 8. Big 8 Nebraska plays for a natty in those years.
2. The resurgence of Oklahoma. It’s very possible Nebraska plays for the national title in 2000 if they don’t get thumped by the Sooners. Maybe that momentum makes a difference in 1 pt. against KSU a couple of weeks later.
3. The resurgence of Miami. The 2001 Miami team Nebraska had to play for the national title was pretty damn strong.
That isn’t all there is to it, but that created some headwind. It’s not a coincidence that once Nebraska’s old bullies returned to form after a mid ‘90s slump (plus playing in a deeper conference with a championship game) things got tougher for the Huskers.

Auburn LSU have had some classics. The Earthquake game and the 1994 Interception game could be in the conversation. I was at the 1994 game and to this very day I don't know if I believe it was real or not.

A couple I'll always remember;

That is the year after the 52-52 tie where BYU had a massive comeback. It was a Thursday night game in Provo where the Aztecs had never won. Faulk ends up with almost 300 yards on the ground to get SDSU the win 45-38.

Stewart throws a 60+ yard hail mary to upset Michigan in the Big House.

I always remember the 1994 Michigan-Colorado game in Ann Arbor that ended on a hail mary thrown by Kordell Stewart. Might be the first game I really remember watching when I was a kid.
