re: UL (Lafayette) is beginning to harm themselves with this name stuff

Can you not grow and improve under your current name? Does Lafayette have such a negative stigma that the mere inclusion of it in association with your school detracts growth?
Is it really that hard to understand that an athletic brand of "Louisiana" is easier to grow with and spread than the brand "Louisiana-Lafayette"?

The relevant section from the University of Louisiana System's Name Change Policies and Guidelines section: LINK (pdf)
At best, it's an attempted end around the name guidelines for the University of Louisiana system.
quote:
III. University and System Name Guidelines All institutions within the University of Louisiana System are to comply with the following precepts and guidelines set forth to govern and coordinate the use of the University of Louisiana name and logo:
C. The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, “UL,” and/or the
phrase “U of L” are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations
(alumni associations, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic,
public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the
University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the
municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University
of Louisiana at Rayne.

Calling yourself only "Louisiana" breaks no law, as stated in one of my previous posts. And if you really don't think that LSU politics hasn't stopped progress of other in-state schools, then you're oblivious. Did you not read about Huey Long? And let's not forget LSU adding majors from ideas of other on-state schools to grow themselves only for it to catch up
with them just recently when all of those cut backs occurred (2010), and they had to lay off over 100 faculty members because the school was too big to function.

They cant act like they represent the whole system/state as Lafayette though

So ULM can drop Monroe, LA Tech can drop Tech, and so on and so forth? Or is it just ULL that can arrange their name for the betterment of their school?

every university is cutting departments. we cut a few majors, I'm sure UL-Lafayette did as well.

Very true, but the cuts weren't nearly as bad financially as LSU's

Or am I "oblivious" because Im not a ULL fan? And as soon as yall are deserving of being called "Louisiana", maybe your political backing might be strong enough to overtake LSU and "the man"

Come onto our campus and ask how many of us care what Lafayette calls themselves.

Let them do what they want. LA Tech seems to like being LA Tech. Let ULM call themselves whatever they'd like.
USL began making the push in the 70's. Other schools are welcome to make their attempt.
There's been no mass-hysteria over the matter (except for these threads by people who have no dog in the fight).

University of Louisiana, UL, or U of L
Is there anything in that statement that says a school can't brand itself as simply "Louisiana?" I don't see it.
Nothing in the ULS policy, but without a copy of the 1995 Acts of the Legislature handy (leg website only goes back to 1997), I cannot say whether or not "Louisiana" alone is prohibited by law

Well first off it's not your school name and ya'll already have one of the coolest mascot names in sports with the Ragin Cajuns. Why not market that name instead. The Cajuns have done very well on TV with Swamp people.

I'll include ULL next time a thread is started by someone who "doesn't care".

Everyone has a dog in this fight, we're all Louisiana residents.
Y'all would write everyone and then say, oh no one here to stop us.

ULM and LaTech are marketable athletic brands, and are easy on the eyes. ULL looks like complete wombat shite. Not sure if that's just my homer sunglasses making ULL look and sound horrible.

Yes. They most certainly can. But they aren't gonna do it because they both seem content with their current brand.
And as Baer's foot said, I think ULM and LaTech are both very good brands and roll off the tongue much better than ULL.

I agree, and have no problems with yall being UL. The University of Lafayette

Damn. After reading this thread I am beginning to understand some of the hatred towards ULL fans.
Why do you all seem so butt hurt? Why find other people to blame for causing this when it's your own that seems to be throwing the fuel on the fire?
