How would you describe the teams not in the power conferences?

For real...Izzo is beyond lucky his team got in.

Team A (19-14) resume:

*Illinois (26-8)
*Baylor (23-10)
Indiana St (28-6)
*Northwestern (21-11)

(2-5) in last 7 games of season.

Team B (21-13) resume:

*Purdue (29-4)
*Alabama (21-11)
*Nebraska (23-10)
*@ Michigan St (19-14)

(6-1) in last 7 games of season.

*Indicates NCAA Tournament selection.

Without looking, just comparing wins...who are you taking??? Team A or Team B...One team won head to head!! One team was firmly in...and the other wasnt even on the bubble. Make it make sense to me. So Izzo can shove it!!

If anything teams like USF and Indiana State should get in over a 20-15 team

The ought to back off giving bids to teams that finish 5th in the their conference, no matter the size of the conference. If you have had a season to prove that you are not a top 5 conference team, then you have proven you don't belong in the tournament.

I wouldn't, because basketball doesn't have "power conferences." At least, there's no agreed-upon list.

Mid-major originally meant "D1 basketball teams without a I-A football team." At some point, so many teams moved up to I-A football that people decided that wasn't a good criterion. After that point, which I'd put around 2000, there was no longer any agreed-upon definition of "mid-major" and it should have gone away.

Some people use the term to refer to schools with P5 football teams, but that's football, the "P5" distinction is itself breaking down, and that criterion is just bad. It excludes teams from conferences like the Big East, A10, etc.

I've seen people throw the AAC into the "major" category, but have you seen ECU's gym? North Texas is "major" now?

At the same time, I don't really think that Memphis team that came out of CUSA and got to the tournament finals (where they took an obvious dive) was "mid-major," and yet Memphis is in the AAC. So is the AAC "major?" Was CUSA when Memphis was in it? How about Louisville? Tulane, ECU, and Southern Miss were in that conference, too.

My point is that "mid major" once had a meaning, but it's turned into meaning "team that I [whoever the frick I may be] didn't think was good at basketball." There are better ways to say that.

SEC
ACC
Big 12
Big Ten
Big East
PAC 12

Mid Major is everything else, generally conferences you don’t see on TV often

Straight up ranking the top 68 teams would have a lot more upsets and more parity but would be a far worse product.

100% agree.

Watching 30 win McNeese is far more intriguing than watching a 17 win mediocre team from a power conference.

Exactly. The thing that makes it exciting is that every team has an opportunity. You can go 10-20 then win your conference tourney and still have a chance.

I don't wanna watch the 8th best team in the big 10 play in the tourney, I wanna see teams from difference conferences

Well that asswipe has been on a mission to eliminate every Conference and just have the media follow the SEC...so he's not really an objective voice and his opinions are not healthy for National college athletics.

Not everyone subscribes to that list, though, and I don't find arguing about which conferences should be on the list interesting. Better to just shitcan the term.

I know you are an Ohio State guy, but MSU fans are full blown fire Izzo right now. My cousins are diehard State fans and I couldnt believe what I was hearing, they want him gone. The teams havent had a rim protector for like 5 years and apparently his lineups and adjustments have been terrible.

Almost 20% of teams in div I make the tournament now. Expansion would only be for the money.

fricking terrible idea. Shame on you Izzo.

Getting that NCAA tourney bid is the ultimate prize for a vast majority of conferences in this country, and removing that pushes every single one of them further toward being completely irrelevant.

And the single bid conference tourney championships are highly entertaining because of what's at stake.

Izzo told reporters ahead of the Spartans’ first-round game against Mississippi State Friday in Charlotte that automatic bids for mid- and low-major conference tournament champions have “got to be looked at seriously.”

“While everybody likes the upsets in the first round I’m not sure if that’s true as it goes on,” Izzo said, per ESPN’s David Hale.

Lol at this self serving shithead vomiting out this BS the same day UVA gave us all proof positive that mid tier teams from power conferences need to shut the frick up and deal w/sometimes getting bumped off the bubble.

yeah, i mean who doesnt want 19-14 10-10 majors in the tourney

izzo can go frick himself, he's a little count, crying about midmajors. He should worry about his mediocre team, and the coaching job he did, not midmajors.
