I’m gonna miss the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar, Cotton, and Peach Bowls.

Rose Bowl propagated the false narrative that the Pac 10 was a dominant conference by putting on a matchup with a team from the equally “Prestigious” Big 10.

Most overrated bowl game ever

I’ve been to a bunch of bowls, including 3 of the 5 current major bowls, and this is just absolute nonsense. The Rose Bowl is the best bowl scene there is. It isn’t close.

Pasadena is beautiful, the weather is perfect, and the pageantry of the Rose Bowl is completely unmatched. While every other bowl traded in their history for sterile pro stadia and corporate influence to play in prime time, the Rose Bowl stayed the course and honored tradition as an American cultural icon. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to attend one understands why it is so highly regarded.

When did the B1G-PAC10/12 matchup last have title implications?

Who cares? That was never what made the Rose Bowl a time honored American tradition.

But when the BCS started in 1998, it all but eliminated that possibility. The final Rose Bowl before the inaugural BCS title featured AP national Champion Michigan. In 2003, USC played #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl and won the AP title — the only split national title since the inception of the BCS.

Because the Rose Bowl has been out there acting like they're the fricking Masters of college football

No, the Rose Bowl has been acting like the Rose Bowl, and they had a desire to maintain the tradition of the event. They shunned tons of corporate money to keep their afternoon kickoff. They care just as much about the parade as they do the game.

So the Rose Bowl signed its own death warrant this fall — giving up not only its traditional East–West matchup, but also its traditional time, on the afternoon of New Year’s Day. Instead, the Rose Bowl will be just another playoff game.

I assumed this was going to die anyway with USC and UCLA going to the Big10

Rose bowl should be the national championship every year on New Year’s Day. Make it like Omaha.

Now that's an idea that could save CFB.

The Rose Bowl just wanted to protect their matchup. To me, that wasn’t being holier than thou. The rest of the game changed, the Rose Bowl chose not to. I like that.

Whoever hates watching the Rose Parade or Rose Bowl Game is frankly a Communist...or hates what makes CFB great.

Really? You don't like sun, football played on grass and beautiful girls? Bunch of weirdos up in here.

And frankly the Granddady deserved its special status. That's why it is called the Granddady. You don't spit on the Don...but they're now run by idiots who previously would whack you.

The Rose Bowl matched the viewership of the playoff games last year...and it wasn't even a playoff game.

#11 Utah vs. #6 Ohio State

And it was the best game of the bowl season as usual. 48-45.

The Rose Bowl is a very good bowl game with tons of history but it’s time to get with the times. It’s not the mid-20th century anymore.

Rose Bowl was always a meh game IMO. No one in the south cares about that game 95% of the time.

Last good Rose Bowl was USC vs Tulane. At least we have the Cotton Bowl now.

People are jealous of things they don’t get to experience or participate in. It’s why the big ten is so jealous of national championships.

Rose Bowl always claimed it was the "Grandaddy" and the greatest, etc. The first college football season I can really remember, kept up with all the games, bought the preseason magazines, etc. was 1980. The Rose Bowl in the 80's was some bad matchups. A lot of 8-3 and teams ranked in the teens. The Orange and Sugar, then also the Fiesta had way better matchups.
Bowls that determined the National Champion( or had something to do with it) from 1980-91:
1980-Sugar(Orange could've come into play if UGA had lost in the Sugar earlier in the day)
1981-Orange(Sugar could've come into play had Clemson lost in the Orange. Both games were played at the same time)
1982-Sugar
1983-Orange and Cotton
1984-Holiday
1985-Orange(Sugar could've come into play since Oklahoma beat Penn St in the Orange, but Miami got obliterated by Tennessee. Games on at the same time)
1986-Fiesta
1987-Orange
1988-Fiesta
1989-Sugar and Orange
1990-Citrus and Orange
1991-Orange and Rose(finally)
As you can see the Rose was not a major player in deciding a national champion. It has always been about hype with no substance. Two 8-3 teams ranked something like 14 and 17. Joining the BCS and CFB Playoff is the best thing that has happened to the "Grandaddy" to keep it relevant.
