2014, the Rose Bowl surrendered, and agreed to become part of the playoff system. The Rose Bowl negotiated a deal preserving its East-West tradition in most years, but every third year, it would instead host a playoff semi-final.

Sadly, that compromise only delayed the game’s death.

In 2022, television companies and college football conferences moved to expand the playoffs from four teams to 12 to make more money. The Rose Bowl resisted this push, but had little leverage.

So the Rose Bowl signed its own death warrant this fall — giving up not only its traditional East–West matchup, but also its traditional time, on the afternoon of New Year’s Day. Instead, the Rose Bowl will be just another playoff game.

In Pasadena, city leaders have shamelessly spun the death of their traditional game as a victory. More tourists might visit our hometown because of greater excitement around a playoff, they’ve said. But that’s nonsense.

Memorial Service will be held on 1/2/23

Rose bowl should be the national championship every year on New Year’s Day. Make it like Omaha.

I disagree opening it up to new fan bases creates new buzz

I’m sure the Georgia people can speak to it, lsu rolled deep for a game against ucla because it was the rose bowl

The rose bowl reputation, weather, and experience is still top notch, that isn’t going away

Good, stupid Rose Bowl always held up everything and cost us a chance to see Michigan/Nebraska and Penn St/I forget title games in the late nineties

You mean make it convenient for teams and fans from both coasts? The only people who like traveling to California are the homeless. New Orleans or Dallas make more sense.

The rose bowl has been irrelevant for decades. This is a merciful death.

.

The next time someone says they love CFB because of its traditions and players play for the love of the game, tell them to go frick themselves.

They took the amateurism, now they've taken the pageantry.

Enjoy 3 Pro football leagues..NFL, XFL and CFB...all corporate and banal.

The reason we had a couple of shared national championships is because of the rose bowl. Instead of finding out who the better team is, we get to argue about. Thanks rose bowl.

Did they forget the part where the Big 10 raided the Pac 12 for USC and UCLA and has left the conference on the brink of death?

I find it very odd that college football purists on here hate the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl symbolized the CFB I grew up loving. It was a constant. Same time every year…beautiful sunset…same stadium, no frills, just a shitload of people watching what usually turned out to be a fun battle between two really good teams.

I didn’t need it to be part of some playoff. Just because it didn’t include SEC teams or anybody from my area didn’t make it less than.

The same people shitting on the Rose Bowl will then bitch about some other modern twist that sucks: portal, NIL, etc.

So this is the last one traditional, East-West, Utah-Penn State, Rose Parade, sun setting over the San Gabriel mountains as the game will now probably start 9pm EST.

Goodnight, Goodbye and Farwell America, you had a good 250 year run.
