Steph Curry: NBA stars are underpaid, would like to have equity in NBA franchises

He made $55 million in the last season, and the next season, 2025-2026, it will be closer to $60 million as The Golden State Warriors will be the league‘s most valuable at an estimate of $8.8 billion, according to Forbes.
With an estimated net worth of $240 million and career earnings topping $410 million, Curry says that is still not reflective of the value he and other stars bring to the league.
Curry argued that compared to the billions the NBA generates, even he — ranked third in career earnings behind LeBron James and Kevin Durant — is only seeing a fraction of the pie.

If tweet fails to load, click here. “To be honest, [my net worth is] not something I really worry about too much. I got somebody that takes care of that for me. What I have going on is about creating a portfolio of stuff that is aspirational in terms of your wealth,” Curry said on Speedy Mormon’s “360 With Speedy” show. “You wanna have something that you look back and are proud of. We’ve been blessed with so many opportunities and so many resources and so many relationships. We wanna be good stewards of it.”
The league generated approximately $10.247 billion in revenue for the 2024–2025 season, according to Basketball-Related Income (BRI), the metric used in the Collective Bargaining Agreement to determine how revenue is sharedbetween the NBA and its players, according to Sportico.
The previous season, 2023–2024, was even more lucrative at about $11.3 billion, according to Buzzfeed.
The NBA generates billions of dollars, and during the 2024-2025 season, the average NBA player earned around $12 million, with top players like Curry, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid, making as much as $50 million, Sports Illustrated reported.
Although players significantly contribute to their teams’ success, NBA rules prohibit active players from owning equity in their teams, a restriction that prevents players from fully benefiting from the league’s financial growth.
“Those numbers sound crazy, but what the league is doing, from whatever era you want to compare it to, to now, is probably 10x that,” he said. “The idea that we can’t participate in equity while we’re playing is part of why I would say yes, we are underpaid, because we want to be able to participate in that rise.”
“Hopefully, sooner or later those rule change just a little bit so players can participate more in the upside of the team equity, the league, the valuations, and all that type of stuff, just because it’s something we deserve,” Curry said.

Not gonna watch all that. But considering the structure of the NBA salaries. Max/super max etc, what he's saying is 100% correct for the stars.
He and LeBron would have commanded much more money in free agency if there was no cap. That's not debatable.

Go buy a share of a team like Jordan when you retire
Being a great employee of a company doesn't entitle you to own part of the company. Their ridiculous salaries are based, in part, on revenue sharing, so I don't know what exactly he should be complain about when he's worth almost half a billion dollars.

Curry during that time went from making 0 to 410 million dollars plus the opportunity to make a ton of money off the court while taking on no risk except that of his body during games.
These guys don’t want to be exposed to any of the downside but think they are owed a piece of everything.

You have stars who make 60+ million per season. And then sit out game 7. F*ck the NBA

The superstars are probably underpaid when it comes to their value to their franchise and the leauge. This only applies to a handful of players.

There is that EQUITY word again…..

He’s not wrong.
The biggest stars are underpaid while you have a ton of borderline/low end all stars who are grossly overpaid.

NBA stars are underpaid
This might be the dumbest statement ever made by anyone
That said, if the revenue received by players and stars is not commensurate and proportionate to overall league revenue per the CBA compared to other sports and their respective CBAs, then they will definitely need to address that the next time the CBA expires

Hard no while still playing and in the era of free agency, conflict of interest and possibility for corruption

Just the white man holding down the 50/million a year black man

If he wants ownership of a team, then he can buy one just like the "greedy" owner of the Warriors did

So they're underpaid due to the COLLECTIVELY BARGAINED AGREEMENT?
I guess then the players should hold out next time to facilitate that change. And if the other players who don't get 50 mil each year can't afford it, the superstars can help the lesser paid players stand strong and pay their bills for them.

NO they aren't.
B/c they are a big star, playing in a league that caters to them and allows them the opportunity to become unworldly famous outside of the sport, they will make 100's of millions of dollars just to wear a certain shoe, or rep a certain car brand or potato chip or drink.
He made $215M with Under Armor, and they gave him 8.8 million shares of stock (worth $75M at the time in 2023, now worth $55M)
He's been making well over $100M/yr in endorsements for quite some time now. That doesn't happen unless he plays in the NBA and is great.
Playing in the NBA is what allows him the opportunity to have his own brand and make all this money off the court.
all that being said, i do think the option to buy stake into the franchise or league should be offered to all players. Something where they can invest their own money into the franchise or even the league, and have some kind of match based on what they pay into it. Obviously that's a lot easier said than done, and i'm not sure how it's fiscally possible, but that is something that i think most athletes would like to be able to do. They aren't a publicly traded company, but that's a common thing with big companies matching 401K's and matching or giving out company stock.

For someone that desires to be viewed as intelligent, he should probably think a little more about value and profit, along with the relevant cash flow models for all franchises along with the capital depreciation, cost segregation reports and amortization schedules.
