Agreed. It's absurd it hasn't been done yet. It really doesn't effect view.

People probably thought the same thing when the NHL first put up all the extra netting behind the goals. Now you never hear anything about it.
The MLB nets will be in the way of big spenders. No comparison

The crazy part is now people think the teams are responsible solely for this issue
Your ticket and an announcement pregame both tell you to be careful and pay attention

You probably like condoms too.

I’ve been to over 500 professional baseball games. I’ve never been hit, or come close to being hit. I go to minor and major league games, sitting in various spots.
There isn’t some universal net being used. Some are very transparent, others not so much.
I DO think people need to lay off their phones during the action. You see MiLB clubs hosting ‘phone free’ night. It’s sad. This is a major problem, but not the sole problem.
If I take a child to the game and sit in an area prone to line drives, that’s on me. I am assuming responsibility. This is no different than sitting courtside at an NBA game and having a player fall on a kid. It’s on the adult to assume the risk.
Furthermore, part of the beauty of baseball is player interaction with fans. Extending the net just furthers the divide. Autograph seekers, baseball hounds, etc are being pushed farther from the field.
I took my 3 y/o nephew to a game and his favorite part was meeting a pitcher, high-fiving the guy, getting a ball, etc. Those interactions will start to disappear.

Maybe they should pay attention to the ballgame.
Don’t be a dumbshit
The common fan is able to react to liner if they’re higher in the stands or further down either line but right behind the dugouts is a danger zone, even for people who are watching. That’s been proven time and again. If even the players want it, you should know that it’s time

that's why parents with children are encouraged to sit behind the existing netting.
Yep if you have kids, better fork out 4 or 5 bills if you just want them to be safe at a baseball game, amirite?

Vast majority of the stadium is safe from line drives.

This statement doesn’t make too much sense. What does the players wanting it have to do with anything?
Of course they SHOULD want it, they don’t want to live with the guilt of hitting a person.
Some a-hole players probably want more barriers with fans so they don’t have to interact.
But again, the players wanting it shouldn’t be the final straw. It should be coming from the league higher ups if it happens.

Irregardless, the netting isn’t really an issue. Only baseball traditionalists hate the idea of extending the netting. You never see people behind home plate complaining about netting. Why? Because it’s a non-issue. They’re close to the action without any risk to their well-being.
Baseball traditionalists would rather just see the sport die than evolve. The people bitching about the netting are probably the same ones agreeing with Ken Rosenthal that all the home runs are killing baseball. If the changes hurt your feelings and ruin your fragile experience then just watch at home on your TV like a bitch

Players know better than most. They’re actually playing the game. They’re watching the fans. They’re witnessing what’s happening every day. They would know better than most when it’s time to add more protection to the fans

Maybe the ball needs to be deadened again. It might lead to safer fans without the need for netting and the style of play we had at the beginning of last century. It would be especially fitting to do so on the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth taking the home run record from 29 to 54.

I hope that they mandate that all stadiums also have to put at least a 6!ft tall plexiglass wall in front of the first row of any 200 level or higher deck. It will keep people safe from falling to the deck below.
As far as netting goes it should cover the entire lower deck. The way to do that is to have 20ft tall poles spaced every 50 ft down the base and outfield walls and around the outfield. Then have poles run up the aisles in a line from the field level pole to the concourse and then tie in to the base of the wall of the deck above. Net all of that.
Leave MLB out of it. This should be made law.by Congress. Government should intervene.

Far more fans have died from getting drunk and falling down at stadiums than getting hit by baseballs, if "safety" is really what matters where are the calls to ban alcohol sales?
Society trades "safety" for other things all the damn time. Cost benefit analysis still applies to everything, even when lives are involved.
The benefit of nets (you prevent the the occasional very rare injury or death from a baseball) does not justify the cost (100% of the best seats at baseball games will have a visual obstruction forever).

Ok

I seriously doubt they are paying close attention to the fans. They better be paying attention to the game.

So are Stadium employees, season ticket holders who attend every game, GMs, etc.

That's cool snowflake. But facts are not racist. Older white males are the main demographic of baseball viewers. But thanks for playing. Have an upvote for trying.
50% are 55 or older
70% are male
83% are white

One of my favorite things to do at a baseball game is wait for my wife to be looking at her phone and then yell HEADS UP at the next crack of the bat. Makes her jump every time and more nets might ruin that. Pass.
