Maybe they should pay attention to the ballgame.
Yeah, I should be able to be drunk and look at my phone without fear of getting hit in the face. Netting it is.

Yeah it’s not like the seats behind him plate aren’t still the best seats.

The big spenders already are behind the netting

Some people think getting hit in the face with a baseball is sexy.

MLB is 150 years old, yet we now need netting. Says a lot about the attention span of our culture today.
That said, I remember when NHL rinks did not have netting behind the nets, then a girl was killed by a stray puck, and the netting went up and hasn't hurt the game at all.

Agreed, but we have to adapt to the times.

It took nearly 100 years of NHL action for a fan to die from a puck. They clearly didn’t feel like they needed netting before that...but I’m sure as hell that girl’s family wishes it had been there.
Why do we have to wait for something tragic to happen before we make changes? Especially when it’s such an easy, harmless solution.

Saying, "we've always done things this way", is what kills a business. It's always happened, we simply have more access to videos and articles. Also, lawsuits...

Surely it doesn’t have anything to do with changes in equipment, player strength/skill, etc.

Are you telling me that you have never, in all your years, taken your eyes off of the batter for a single pitch? That's all it takes. Also, people didn't just start getting hit at games since smart phones. It gets a lot more attention now because we always get 4 angles of it, but that's probably a good thing, because it is an absurdly unnecessary risk with modern netting.
Posted on 6/26/19 at 1:48 pm to slackster
I’m late to this thread but I think it’s due to angles more than anything. If you’re behind or near home plate as shown in your picture, you’re looking perpendicular to the net. The further out you get, the closer your line of sight becomes parallel to the net unless you want to watch outfielders picking their noses all night. Looking parallel to the net completely blocks your view. So if the net blocks 1% at perpendicular and 100% at parallel, the further down the line you're sitting, the more your view of the infield is affected. Just my opinion.

You're going to take some of the most expensive, up close seats and put a big tacky net up? It's ridiculous.
Like, behind home plate?

I also think they could probably come up with a thinner netting material that is semi-transparent.
Like thick, hardcore fishing line.
But that would not be cheap I guess
