Verlander was a bit more forthcoming in an interview with For The Win in April, suggesting that the Astros’ heralded analytics department offered information that helped.

“When I first got to the organization, they kind of showed me some of the stuff that they can do, and try to do,” he said. “When you get older, every competitive advantage is an advantage, and I wanted that. I joke with guys in the organization that I was probably the first pitcher to come over and ask for more information, because they can kind of give you a lot. I want more. Give me everything you’ve got.”

I think the Astros being into more analytic helped break down some of his mistakes and showed him his spin rTe, etc. It worked for Morton, McHugh, and now Cole so if Verlander accepted it he would benefit.

Makes no difference to his bank account, so why does he care

Probably not. But it makes a lot of difference to his success. Hes a fly ball pitcher. The rules did pull the rug out from under fly-ball style pitchers and subsidize the success of ground-ball pitchers.

If they got rid of the 3 pt line, Paul George would probably care, even though hed still get a max. DeMar DeRozan would probably be happy.

The balls are different. They are spun tighter. They have started using the same balls down in AAA and teams are setting franchise records for homeruns at the all star break.

I understand his frustration, but everyone has to adapt and figure it out. Deal with it and move on.

I am shocked to see Scherzer hate in this thread. How can someone hate on Scherzer? That guy is must-watch TV and competitive as hell. Amazing what he's doing.

Hot take alert but he might go down as the best free agent signing of all time. And before you say that's hyperbole, please show me better ones.

Isn’t there a place for both of them to be right?
Scherzer says just deal with. That’s cool and macho

Verlander is saying it’s obvious they changed the ball on the sly and Manfred is out denying it in the media today. So verlander is correct and is trying to shine some light on this as he should as a high profile vet.

To be fair, scherzer may also just be a moron. He seems like a guy with a screw loose.

I don’t think I’ve read one anti-Scherzer comment in this thread

There has been anti-Verlander for sure

Scherzer is a great pitcher, but those trying to knock Verlander for bucking the establishment are not doing justice to the game and its legacy

Verlander is a Patriot and Scherzer voted for Hillary and even tweeted his endorsement of her

Verlander’s off-field escapades qualify him as the greatest man who ever lived.
Because he married a whale?

But, I love and respect the game, and I don't feel the present day numbers allow for fair comparison to previous decades.

I mean the steroid era already screwed that up. At the end of the day, MLB ran the numbers and it came back that people like seeing HRs (duh) so basically they are trying to recreate the steroid era (which was an enormously popular era) by “juicing” the ball instead of the player.

If he had Scherzer’s stat line I would believe this. But a majority of his earned runs are from bombs. He is doing this because he is being personally affected by it.

Who cares why? It is true. It is weird the league didn’t announce the ball change.

The league is in the wrong. They didn’t want asterisks by the Records. Periods like pre-ball juice and post-ball juice

Anyone who criticizes Verlander is wrong here.

ETA: I have never been a fan of verlander. I am a braves fan. I like the juiced balls but the league is wrong not verlander.

No it's not and you have no evidence to back it up

God almighty,here we go again.

OK,3 of the top 4 years for HR's in HISTORY were 2016,2017 and 2018.Do ya think there just MIGHT be a trend going on here?

So you're telling me that MLB changed the balls this year after 3 record years in a row for HR's?

The balls this year are different, there is less drag, creating farther travel distances. That is a fact.

Are you telling me that the balls haven’t changed?

ETA: Link for anyone that has access to The Athletic about the balls this year:

Gee,the same thing was said last year.Hmmmm

But now, good news. A committee of experts and scientists has released a study on MLB’s behalf about the home run spike, confirming the balls are flying farther thanks to better carry and reduced drag. The downside is that this crack team of scientists still has no definitive answer as to why balls are doing that

Still looking for the "majic bullet" I suppose.

And why exactly was the ball changed after 3 record years of HR's?

Please explain

I think everyone is wondering that same question.
