Austin already has a Stars farm club.
It’s half an hour from Austin but yeah

Winnipeg and Ottawa are in the most danger, as far as a market is concerned, but both have deep-pocketed owners. Depends on how long a guy is willing to lose money to keep teams there.
Deep-pocketed owners that would probably (secretly) love to move the team to Houston or a suburb of Atlanta.
ETA: kind of ironic since Winnipeg moved from Atlanta.

The Aeros did ok… but it was only minor league level.
Also, the population influx from all over the country to Houston over the past 25 years has probably brought enough genuine fans of the sport.
I think the NHL level would generate enough interest.

Depends. Is Houston a transplant market?
It is.

It’s the 5th largest metro in the country at almost 8 mil. It’s almost the size of DFW, and they have no issues supporting the Stars. I think people are overthinking this. I’m no fan of Houston, but it’s a world class city at this point. A hockey team there is a no brainer.

Would they try building a new arena?
Uh, the Toyota Center?
NHL seems way better suited for having nice arenas in the suburbs where the majority of their fan base would be rather than in the big downtown areas.

Uh you quoted the wrong poster dude.

Hockey should not be played this far south.
Then explain the Panthers, who play west of Miami, which is further south than Houston and won the last 2 Cups prior to this year?

Disagree. Too many games / weeknight games. Need a central location. Vast majority of NHL arenas are downtown. Only “suburban” arenas I can think of are/were Arizona (since relocated to Utah), Ottawa (been an issue for them) and Florida (struggled mightily with attendance prior to becoming elite). I think every other arena in the league is in or near downtown of the major market.
It’ll be interesting to see how Plano works out for the Stars.

obviously makes more sense
There's probably a ton of small markets like Quebec or Hartford, both of whom had teams and lost them in the 90s, before the price of pro sports locked out smaller markets, that would support a team rabidly. Green Bay is in many ways the last of a breed.

Tillman will be involved if the NHL comes to Houston.
He's not going to be happy just being a landlord. If he's not involved in the purchase of a team, he's not involved.

I don't see how you're so convinced. None of the teams have unstable owners that don't make the league any money like the Coyotes. And those Canadian teams are owned by some of the wealthiest businessman in the league.

Jets owners make a frickload of money from all the surrounding property. Senators are working to get a new arena in downtown Ottawa. Neither are going anywhere. They may never win a Stanley Cup. But that doesn't mean they won't turn a profit.

Not to mention the Lightning. Which have been a powerhouse the past 5 years.

I’m about as much involved in local hockey here in Houston as one could be. That being said I personally don’t think it’s a good idea because of how much of a transient town Houston is.
I liken it to the MLB expanding in the 90’s and not taking into account the amount of transplants were in cities like Tampa. People moved there already being life long fans of the Yankees or Mets.
There’s a ton of people from Louisiana here but no ones switching to the Texans from the Saints just because they’re local.

Someone needs to take the Pels in a package deal

I think the Metroplex is big enough to where Plano will be fine, especially since the Stars are an established franchise. I hate the idea that arenas are disposable. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the current venue, but that’s a discussion for another day I suppose.

Someone in Houston can still drive over for Saints games without too much trouble.

A big difference is that those fans can still see their Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, etc in Spring Training. A die hard Yanks fan might be content seeing Single A in Tampa over driving to St Pete for a Rays game in that dump of a stadium.
