Fertitta told the NHL a few years ago the Toyota Center can be ready for hockey again in a few months...

This was when he was pressing to get the Coyotes or Panthers when he rumor was out one of the was moving.

He's been pressing for it.

Mock uniforms are everywhere

Has to be oil or space based name id think.

And? Thats part of the draw/appeal.

Tillman will be involved if the NHL comes to Houston.

Honestly I question how well Houston would do with hockey. Too many fair weather fans. If they weren't pretty good in the first few years I think it could get ugly.

my brain says Houston but my heart says Austin

Austin obviously doesn't have a pro team and I think the city (transplants, especially) would really get behind a big 4 league team. People in Houston already have their Astros, Rockets, and Texans. Hockey fans in Houston can jump onto the Austin team as well. I'm sure they'd prefer that over rooting for the team in Dallas.

Hockey should not be played this far south.

It is probably going to happen but it does not fit with what Texas is about.

Depends. Is Houston a transplant market?

Same result as Phoenix, I don't believe it would be productive in Houston

The Toyota Center isn't going to work if Friedkin owns the team.

quote:

Bettman said the league has entered an agreement with the Friedkin family, who has roughly six months to investigate if a team is possible in Austin or Houston. The agreed investment for the Friedkin family is $3.5 billion, which includes an expansion fee as well as building costs for an NHL arena.

I can’t go into too much detail. I’m affiliated with the local college hockey clubs alongside the beer leagues around Houston.

If you believe the NHL is putting a team in Austin over Houston, you probably believed Disney World was going to be built in NOLA?

Whatever.. take it for what it’s worth from a random poster. #RFND

Yes due to oil and gas, healthcare to a smaller extent

I can definitely see an expansion including Houston and Atlanta

That would certainly derail Phoenix's plans on getting a team back for a while unless they would come in with Quebec City - also very unlikely

I HATE the idea of a 34 team NHL though; needs to cap at 32. If there are two more teams, there will be a play in tournament similar to the NBA.

Austin doesn’t have the corporate support of a city like Houston. Not saying it would be a disaster for Austin but Houston is more than double the size and population. You’d think that Houston would be the more viable choice.

Didn't Houston used to have a minor team called the Aeros?

WHA.

They merged with the NHL but the Aeros didn't come along.

There was also an minor league (IHL) Houston Aeros team in the 1990s:

In the 1990s, the IHL had a lot of teams in big cities without (and some with) NHL teams: Houston Aeros, Atlanta Knights, Milwaukee Admirals, San Francisco Spiders, Cleveland Lumberjacks, Cincinnati Cyclones, Detroit Vipers, Minnesota/Manitoba Moose, Denver Grizzlies, Salt Lake Eagles, Phoenix Roadrunners (also another WHA retread name).

It's the NHL. Just wait 3-5 years.

Especially with many of the small-market canadian teams losing their best American players.

Those Canadian cities are the reason the NHL can be bigger than other leagues. The league needs to cover the major American markets with teams in order to maximize exposure and revenue. They need to be in major cities like Houston and Atlanta.

You have 7 teams in Canada, when the economics of the sport really can only support 4 or maybe 5 at a time. The NHL has made a massive investment in Edmonton and now Calgary, so those two are safe.

Winnipeg and Ottawa are in the most danger, as far as a market is concerned, but both have deep-pocketed owners. Depends on how long a guy is willing to lose money to keep teams there.
