Short answer is that their special teams were an absolute disaster and cost them a number of close games. Also, while their defense was good, it wasn’t really as good as their ranking would suggest (it was number one based on total yardage, but part of the reason the yardage total was so low was because their horrible special teams kept giving opposing teams’ short yardage situations). They started the season 2-5 with all 5 losses being by one score or less, they finished 9-7, but it was too little too late and they missed the playoffs.

Tony Gwynn faced Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez over 330+ times. He only struck out 3 times!
Also, While most "big time" hitters strike out 20-25% of the time, Gwynn is sitting right at an incredible 4.5% .
These are probably the best stat lines in all of sports.
Greg Maddux famously said, "If a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision. Except for that f**king Tony Gwynn."
