No one is side is absolutely right but...to me the owners have a point. The players are worried about 2 yrs from now and making concessions that will set precedence. Well to me any arguments / concessions today arent factorable in 2 yrs (unless covid 20 hits) and players are mildly to somewhat pissed at owners for letting veterans sit and not paying their asking price in F/A... But they brought this on their self terms of control of rookies.
Jack Flaherty was massively underpaid in 2019 but the veterans put the rookies at 500kish numbers to get more money for vets but then got pissed at owners for "ok 30 yr pitcher that went 14 /8. You want 5 yrs 110 million? ..let me think about that" (because we have a really good kid at AA)

Baseball is at a disadvantage in comparison to the NBA and NHL - the owners in those leagues had 75% of their season complete, revenue allocated, and a SALARY CAP. Baseball has had none. If the owners paid the players their regular pay for a short season with no fans, 90% of the league will be bankrupt. Not every team has their own sports networks to fall back on - the majority of their revenue comes from the gates and the $20 beers and $15 hot dogs thanks to the insane contracts that are being dished out to Scott BorASS.

This is patently false.
And the players aren't asking for their full salaries. They're sticking to the agreement from March where they will be paid their per game number.
And no team makes a majority of their revenue from gates and concessions. That's a flat out lie. The players know that because they get to see the financials of every team as part of the CBA, but the general public doesn't know that because there are a lot of media members that carry water for owners to gain access.

The owner's position is that the players' salaries are based upon playing full seasons with fans. Approximately 40% - 50% of a team's revenue comes from fans in the stadiums for 80 games. So, they reason, you can't simply pay the players their full, albeit pro rated, salaries.
The players, on the other hand, are reluctant to give anything back to the owners on the eve of new contract negotiations.
There has to be a middle ground. Pay them 75% of their pro rated salaries while no fans and 100% of their pro rated salaries if and when the fans return this season. Stipulate this is a one year precedent only due to the once in a 100yr virus.

This deal would've been over with very quickly if they didn't put in wording in the initial deal that if we can't allow fans that we will need to renegotiate. Unfortunately they did despite the fact it wasn't looking great for fans to return for a very long time even then.
That being said, I do side with the players on this proposal being arse, although both sides seem to be making this into a shitshow.

Is this correct?
Flipping through the CBA, I see that they get Club Payroll access and an acknowledgment paragraph about recognized interests in gross operating revenues as they relate to Revenue Sharing. But if they have a grievance with how teams are spending on contracts, then they have to take it to arbitration.

The thing about it is, and this is why I’m beginning to be further alienated from the modern professional athlete, is nobody seems to be acknowledging how fricking bad this looks to the fans. Especially from the players’ side. Jobless claims report are at 40 million....40,000,000. People have lost their livelihoods, lost careers they’ve spent years upon years building and the players are acting as if they’re paid in peanuts.
The most recent proposed deal was drastic, but the league’s highest player was slated to make $36m this year would’ve made a “paltry” $7m. That $7m is more than most people would make in their entire lives and he’s acting as if he would go broke “only” making that much.
The league minimum before the virus was $563.5K. The proposed paycut to the league minimum for this year would bring it to $262K. Both numbers are still more than 95% of this nation makes a year.
The owners are being ridiculous and should shoulder a lot of blame here. But the players will be (and rightfully so) the ones that look bad in this. 40 million+ Americans out of work and they’re arguing about money.
ETA: I know I’m going to be on the minority side of this argument; but all this money haggling between both sides ruins the game for me and muddies the water too much. I’d play this game for free every single day of the week if I could. Call me a purist, call me old fashioned, but that’s just the way I see it.
