people say this but they did such a bad job in 2017 and their ineffectiveness back then really planted the seeds for all of this

It was a bad deal, but just like women's soccer it's what the players wanted.

I found this quote interesting-Phillies reliever Pat Neshek
quote:

“But there’s always kind of been that handshake agreement where we’re still going to value the older guys and not just totally (expletive) on them. And that’s what’s happening. So, I think you’re going to have to burn the whole system down and start with that.

“(Owners) have a lot more to lose than us, I think. The players have been talking about, for the last couple of years, putting money aside and I think we’re going to be ready for a fight. We’re willing to go multiple years and I don’t know if (owners) are willing to sacrifice.

Isnt there a a contract negotiation looming in 2 yrs?

There’s a CBA in 2 years that is likely going to get messy.

quote:

Take care of that contention then.

It’s kind of hard to negotiate this years salary two years from now.

If the owners truly needed relief in order to pay the salaries already agreed upon then they would happily show proof of it. The fact that they won’t proves to me that the loss of gate revenue isn’t enough to cause the players to take such a drastic decrease in pay.

They’re trying to make people believe that they’re in serious financial distress but that’s not what their actions show.

I don’t know the answer but both sides need to accept a loss this year and play. The NHL and NBA are crushing them right now.

Let’s say no baseball this season, play next year, then a strike year? Might as well fold the league. Both sides are being massive douchebags

I have no idea how you can expect the player union to make concessions to the owners after the shite they have pulled

Exactly!

Then on top of what they’re doing they’re asking the players to cut 60% of their salary per game due to what the owners claim to be a 30% revenue reduction from lack of fans.

They want to dish all of their losses onto the players. It’s bullshite

A March 26 conversation between MLB and the union in which MLB portrays the union as acknowledging that a new negotiation was needed regarding how players would be paid this season could serve as an email version of a smoking gun.

quote:

The Post, however, has obtained a March 26 email from an MLB lawyer to top league officials that documents the substance of talks between two MLB officials and two MLBPA officials from earlier that morning. The email covers seven points, including that MLB explained to the union officials that MLB would need a second negotiation if games were not played in front of fans to determine pay and claims that union officials understood that concept.

Thus, the email seemingly offers evidence that the union was aware that further talks were potentially necessary.

This is not a surprise. I had significant trouble believing that a group of billionaires had a set in stone agreement that lacked the foresight of reduced crowds.

Well there you have it, straight from the owners themselves, the players are in fact the bad guys. Can’t say I need to see more now that the owners have leaked this.

leave it to this board to bring up an email that leaked 10 days ago that basically everyone involved has laughed at and shrugged off and present it as some smoking gun

I mean it makes a lot more sense then believing that a group of the foremost businessmen in the county suddenly failed in contract negotiations

You have a lot more faith in Rob Manfred than I do.

That being said, I’m sure the March meetings were left at the point of “we will need to adjust as this virus develops, please be ready for more negotiations.” Seems very plausible.

Then, two months later the owners give the players a low ball offer with no concessions, based on an unsubstantiated claim of 40% loss in revenue.

Not exactly good faith negotiations, but I realize some people just want baseball back and are going to blame the people saying “no” regardless

Agreed.

I've said this in a different thread, but the MLB pissed away an absolute golden opportunity in this pandemic to absolutely monopolize TV with the entire country sitting at home craving sports, and they would've done insane ratings and potentially even rebuilt some semblance of a casual fan following.

But in typical fashion, the MLB — both sides — chose to step over a dollar to pick up a dime, and sacrificed medium/long term growth potential to maximize short term leverage, thus continuing to further alienate casual fans and accessions.
