Jeff Passan

"Across baseball, hundreds of minor league players were cut today and lost their jobs, sources tell ESPN. Hundreds more will be released over the next week. In the end, upward of 1,000 players could see their baseball careers end. The minor leagues have simply been devastated."

"In normal years, cuts happen but not en masse like this. The fallout from the coronavirus, expected minor league contraction and the anticipated cancellation of the 2020 minor league season prompted organizations each to release dozens of players, who were being paid $400 a week."

These are your guys just hanging on to the dream... not your guys with names on the top prospect lists.

The guys on the prospect lists need someone to play against.

And often enough to justify the costs, some of those guys "just hanging on to the dream" make an impact at the MLB level.

I can't but imagine that most minor league teams are now finished as well because if MLB is in financial trouble this will be an easy cash supply they can conserve by eliminating the minor leagues and going back to relying on what's left of college baseball for their talent.

Max Scherzer is the real victim here. Don't forget that.

Someone needs to deliver the message to MLB players that there’s no law saying that a baseball player is with $100 million over 10 years. You’re worth what you draw, and they (owners and players) seem hell bent on driving that number down. Maybe what baseball needs is a reset to an NHL level.

Sounds like they'd be better off on unemployment

If they signed a contract, that's what they're worth.

The players agreed to prorated salaries.

The owners are asking to renegotiate something that was already decided because they learned later on that it would be bad (relatively) for them.

The owners are acting in bad faith. They are attempting to get the players to agree to terms that will be used against them in the next CBA negotiations.

The issue is that the owners are more interested in winning the next CBA right now than they are putting a product on the field.

What part are you disagreeing with? You can be a once in a hundred generations level player, but if it’s in a sport no one gives a shite about anymore, you aren’t worth big money.

At least they'll be able to collect it.

The A's are just going to stop paying their Minor Leaguers but they won't be able to sign with anyone else or collect unemployment.
