25 out of 32 NFL teams have experienced decline in local TV ratings this year

The National Football League might be enjoying another season of strong ratings, especially in an election year, but those aren’t translating to local markets for whatever reason. They tell a different story this season, with some of the league’s biggest markets seeing declines in viewership.
At the forefront of the 25 of 32 teams experiencing a decline in ratings are two of the league’s primetime darlings, who share a stadium—the New York Jets and Giants. While the Jets are coming off a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football, their fans aren’t going out of their way to watch Gang Green, losers of five straight entering Thursday when they aren’t on primetime.
In fact, according to Puck’s John Ourand, the Jets represent the biggest drop in local ratings in the AFC, down 32 percent from a season above. It appears that another losing season has caused one of the more passionate fanbases in the NFL to grow apathetic. And after Week 9, the Jets are only on primetime one more time—Week 11, Sunday Night Football vs. the Indianapolis Colts—so unless they turn their 3-6 season around, those numbers seem likely to continue to be unimpressive.
The same goes for the New York Football Giants, who have seen their local ratings down 33 percent.
On the opposite coast, the story in Los Angeles is a curious one.
The Chargers, riding a winning record (4-3) under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, have seen local TV ratings fall by 25 percent. Meanwhile, the Rams, sitting at 3-4, have faced a more modest seven percent decline, though their fan base still seems less than enthused.
Elsewhere, traditionally strong markets are showing signs of wear.
In Boston, the Patriots’ struggling season has driven local viewership down by 25 percent. Despite hopes pinned on the Browns, Cleveland fans are tuning out, with ratings off by 20 percent.

Refs probably a big reason for that. Can’t even celebrate a TD in real time anymore in fear of a phantom flag. It’s insane.

Lots of bad football teams this year. It's a tight race for the #1 pick

I’ve been conditioned to celebrate a 2nd time after a score when you finally get the impression that a flag hasn’t been thrown.
That should be a huge problem. You’ve broken the game if the rules cause this type of uncertainty.

I wonder how redzone, Sunday ticket, and YouTube tv’s quad box account for this…
I still watch the saints every week, but usually as one of 4 games with the quad box… does that still count for local ratings? People might still be watching just as much football, but less of their local team with redzone being so fun and with Sunday ticket finally getting away from directv

I think huge. This is why the NFL hasn’t previously made it universally available IMO. To protect all the markets. Once the entire country can select their games at will, you’re going to see stratification.

My Saints Fandom has plummeted but my overall NFL Fandom has increased

Yeah same I usually do not even watch the Saints game for the most part just glance and check in on it. I will usually have Saints game on one tv and for the main screen have it on Redzone for the entire day.

Dennis Allen just needs to be fired yesterday and the sun will rise again in NOLA. I actually feel sorry for y’all.

It's going to take a while for ratings tabulation services to catch up in this new digital age.

Ironically both Pats and Jags have their QBs.

Is this because of fantasy, gambling or an actual interest in watching NFL games?

I cannot handle the hype.

Games take longer than ever
Officiating is as poor as ever.
We’re coming off a generational run of QB play to an era of extremely mediocre QB play.
Overall, the game is a really terrible product right now. And I say that as a fan of the saints, who are basically the poster child for the fall I’m describing.

Games are too long with too many commercials. I don't even have tv anymore and once you get used to watching shows without commercials there's no going back.
Now a days if I watch any NFL at all it will be highlight videos on youtube. I don't see how anyone could sit through 3 to 4 hours of commercialized tv.

Doesn’t help that several are from the larger markets too.

Good. The only way the owners will ever work on improving the product is if everyone stops watching

Its a bad product. but since they have betting involved now that will keep them propped up.
