re: Kirby unhappy with all of FSU's opt-outs: "It affected the game. 100%."

So college football fans seem mad the bowl games don’t matter, well, maybe don’t literally tell a team their entire 13 game season was pointless
FSU was literally told every single game you played was pointless and didn’t matter, yet they were supposed to continue to care?

12 team playoff will lead to opt outs earlier and earlier.
Let’s say Ohio State loses 2 games early.
They could see several players opt out the rest of the season.
Good players on mediocre teams could just opt out after 2 or 3 losses.
It could effect who make playoffs IF enough opt out it could make the pickers of the at large bids strain “well they are 11-1, but there were several players for the back half of their schedule that opted out.”
The 12 spots in playoff need to be earned, not selected.

But CFB is broken and I don’t know if it can be fixed.
The point of college is to benefit its students. NIL and the portal give players more options to better themselves. The real problem is middle age adults who care too much about 20 year olds playing football.
If some smokin’ hot sophomore at UGA is making millions on IG and TikTok, no one cares about that.
If some computer science major at UF has a multimillion dollar idea and leaves school midsemester to pursue it, no one cares about that.
But, man, if a football player makes money off fans who will simp for him and leaves school when his draft stock is secure, oh the horror!

That's my football coach.

What you’re basically describing here is “real” NIL, I and most people don’t care if a player earns money through endorsements, monetizing social media etc. Where most people have a problem is pay for play disguised as NIL and these ridiculous collectives. Either these guys are college kids or they’re pros and right now they’re being treated like pros with no structure.

If someone wants to outright pay Johnny Fivestar a bunch of money to attend Okie State or Oregon, so be it. Good for him.

quote:It wont. Because even with 12 teams, the new super conferences have already rigged the system before it happened. SEC and Big Ten will have 8/9 teams in. And then scraps for the rest.
Hopefully the 12 team playoff changes things, but the current state of it as a whole sucks.
Regional conferences with 12 teams would have been the best, allowing a true playoff. Now it’s just the super conference invitational.
NIL has not ruined college football. The transfer portal has and super conferences will put the nail in the coffin.

The difference here is that Bill Gates Jr and this OT7 instathot are going to make that money even if they never step foot on campus.
How exactly does 18 yo Arch Manning make $3MM if college football doesn’t exist?
That’s the point. That’s why fans are “simping” for him. It has less to do with him and more to do with him choosing their team.

Where do you think the NIL money is coming from?

Is the income in any way tied to the school?

So they found a way to make money without the school.

So it appears you can make the connection that they are making money off of their school affiliation.
The problem is not that the players get paid, the problem is there is no clear link between consideration and what is expected from it. They aren’t technically getting paid to play. Just a completely broken, illogical system. And people that can’t get past the first mental hurdle of whether or not they deserve to make money have enabled it, and sadly still don’t seem to understand the issues that have changed the product, or the dynamics of the underlying market that supports it.

Play non playoff bowl games in week 1.
=No more opt outs.
The guys going pro don’t want to practice/wait a month and then play a meaningless game.
I hate changing traditions but that’s where we are because they opened that door.

I think with 12 team playoff a lot of the smaller bowls will cease to exist. There won’t be a market for them. Bowl contraction is coming.

Then cut out all the stupid bowl games that are meaningless.
This is the Orange bowl. If it's meaningless, they are all meaningless.

Doesn’t really matter.
Johnny Fivestar is headed to the NFL one way or another. If college football folded, there would be some kind of feeder system in its place and players would leave it as soon as they’re NFL ready and still get their millions.
The players have all the leverage here because NIL isn’t going away and no one is going to unilaterally try to inhibit players from doing anything because they will all go somewhere else.
If Alabama tells Johnny Fivestar they expect him to play in all bowl games and accept NIL limitations and Ohio State doesn’t have those expectations, JF is going to be a Buckeye. No one is going to say no to these kids because they’re afraid of putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage and losing to their rivals over it.

There are too many bowl games. They need to get rid of four or five of them.
This is a popular opinion I’ve never understood. Those cities should have their bowl games if they care to. You can watch or not watch as you care to. If those games aren’t profitable, they’ll cease to exist. Just let the market decide, not some arbitrary edict.
Posted on 12/31/23 at 12:55 pm to Kinderman
Well making it to a Bowl game has become increasingly meaningless in the past few decades, so, this isn't a surprise.

Players play the whole year wprry free except the last game? DUMB.
