Says college football needs to fix it.

quote:

"People need to see what happened tonight, and they need to fix this," Smart said, lamenting the flood of opt-outs and portal entries on teams playing in non-playoff bowl games. "It needs to be fixed. It's very unfortunate that they have a good football team and a good football program, and they're in the position they're in."

quote:

For his part, Smart said the impact of the opt-outs was notable, and even with an expanded playoff coming next year, the bowls outside the playoff risk becoming glorified scrimmages.

"You can say it's their fault and they have to solve their own problem," Smart said. "We had our guys, and they didn't have their guys. College football has to decide what they want. I know things are changing. But there's still going to be bowl games outside of those. People need to decide what they want and what they want to get out of it, because it's really unfortunate for those kids on that sideline that had to play in that game and didn't have their full arsenal. And it affected the game, 100%."

Player contracts are coming. Should’ve ironed that out before pay for play got “legalized”

Good for Kirby speaking up. It doesn't take a genius to see college football is on a cliff looking at a very long drop if things don't change.

College football has done everything it possibly could to become terrible.

Hopefully the 12 team playoff changes things, but the current state of it as a whole sucks.

Agree 100%. I love football, college and pro, but the amount of interest I've lost in college football the past two years is huge. Hadn't watched but maybe 5 minutes of it so far this season

Eta: when I say season, I mean bowl season

You can’t commit nil and allow players unlimited free agency
If one party is providing you benefits, the other party will have to reciprocate in some kind of way or it’s gonna be non stop insanity
Nothing stopping a coach from taking a new job and taking almost entire team with him and cutting the team he inherits when that team had invested time and money in that player

Nobody wants to watch a blowout like that. Competitors like Kirby don’t want a game like that either

It’s also not safe for freshman or guys deep in the depth chart who aren’t ready to face off against a bunch of guys about to be in the NFL. Increases odds of injury

It’s weird there is more money on tv deals and paying players than ever but they keep doing things to worsen the product.

Eventually it will come to a head because ratings and profitability will tank as fans lose interest.

Programs and media are paying more and more for a product declining in value

What can change to fix things?

Athletes are min/maxing now.

You obviously know that there is too much money in sports for young athletes to play for us for free.

Lot more than opt outs that needs to be fixed. But we have the semi-finals in a couple days. I have a feeling tonight's game will be forgotten about in less than 48hrs and the same idiots that are wrecking CFB will just continue to do so.

As I stated in another thread - just stop watching. When fans / viewers go away, you can rest assured things will change.
