If you look at the stats, MVP basically comes down to Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Both of their teams made the playoffs. Let’s look at their stats.

Jackson
3787 passing yards, 37/4 TD/int ratio, 120.6 QBR

765 rushing yds, 6.1 avg, 3TD

Allen
3549 passings yards, 26/6 TD/int ratio, 101.2 QBR

514 rushing yards, 5.3 avg, 10 TDs

Seems like you can make a case for both. They have really good stats. Lamar may be a bit more efficient. But I look at the betting odds and Allen is an overwhelming -550 favorite. Now I couldn’t help but believe that Lamar winning the MVP has a big part to play into this. Had Allen or Mahomes won the MVP last year, I dont think Allen would be a -550 favorite right now. Maybe Lamar would be the favorite or 50/50 with Allen.

I find this odd because aren’t you suppose to vote MVP for each season independently?

Lamar is having a fantastic season and is deserving of MVP, but I've watched a bunch of games of both and Josh Allen, despite stats, seems to be playing at a more ridiculous level. I can't explain it in the stats though

Lamar is a freak too, both awesome.

It's a real thing in every sport. Derrick Rose's MVP trophy should be inscribed "Anyone but Lebron".

Of course, it was truly MVP of the season in question in a vacuum Lebron would have won like 10 in a row

I think they need to redefine exactly what MVP means. In my opinion, you have many people voting and none of their criteria are the same.

Are we voting for the best player on the best team?

Are we voting for the player who is most valuable to their team’s success?

Are we voting for a player with the best stats?

Does it HAVE TO be a player on a playoff team?

It seems like the criteria switches from year to year, depending on what the media wants the prevalent narrative to be

I think if you blow the whole thing up and start some sort of campaign to where you clearly define what an NFL MVP should look be and what the criteria is, I think and it’s an award that could gain some much deserved prestige

Yes, if Lamar hadn't won it last year the race would be closer. That's just facts.
Lamar is much better than he was last year too. (Henry obv helps a lot.)

Also, change "QBR" in your OP to passer rating.

I guess the argument could be made that Allen is shouldering more of the load because Lamar has Henry.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about though. Nobody knows how ‘MVP’ should be defined because everyone has different definitions for it

Last year Allen had better stats than Lamar. Did anyone care?

Eh, Dak probably had the best qb season on paper last year. Allen just had a lot of td runs.

I think Barkley should get some love of he goes over 2000 yards... but he just doesn't have enough tds to win imo. Allen would have to really suck the last 2 weeks

Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have both been deserving of the MVP the last two seasons

It's definitely a real thing. If Dak won MVP last year(which I think he should) Lamar is probably the runaway favorite this season. Not to mention, Lamar is likely being penalized for his lack of playoff success in prior seasons. Whether that is good reasoning or not, I will let someone else debate that.

I think Josh Allen is a very deserving recipient He's probably finished 2nd or 3rd in voting the past 4 years. You can't go wrong with giving him the award imo.

The NFL MVP Award is stupid. Just rename it "Top QB on a winning team" Award.

The Offensive Player of the Year covers RB, WR decently enough. Same for the Defensive Player of the Year.

Same goes for Terry Pendleton over Barry Bonds

I’m a Ravens fan and I think Purdy should have won MVP over both. MVP is supposed to be an award for the player who had the best season instead of which player is better than who. Otherwise, guys like Montana, Brady, and Mahomes would have five or six MVPs.

Maybe but also the Ravens not being first in their division hurts. If they win out and get the 3 seed he may win

That was long before any controversy over Bonds. Pendleton won because the Braves went from worst to first and Bonds numbers were not as good as the year before when he won. Bonds won the next 2 and eventually 4 in a row to give him 7.

It usually happens more so when that player doesn't convert regular season success into playoff success.

Happened with Jokic in the NBA. He won 2 MVPs in a row but could never do anything in the playoffs. So they didn't give it to him the next year, and of course he goes and wins it.

Obviously NBA and NFL are different but I do believe the voters don't want the same guy winning it every year unless it's just obvious they are the hands down best player. Which would mean elite stats AND championships.

Lamar Jackson may have fallen into that category because he crumbles in the playoffs.
