If another playoff expansion happens, which it will, then the idea of a bowl game is essentially killed. I think that exhibition game can still be a valuable launching pad for some G5 talent wanting to make a statement for the draft. I’m sure guys in the MAC would be down for a free trip and some goodies.

Outside of that, this kills some fun games a longstanding locations, like the Alamo, Sun, and Florida bowls. Those are major events for these cities, and can be some relatively cheap entertainment for fans.

We already know the people calling the shots don’t give a shite about anything traditional, so that is a non-factor. I have a feeling most bowls will be dead when the next expansion hits, rendering a slew of 6-8 win teams being done in November.

The only way to save the bowls is to put them at the beginning of the season and have the outcome count towards the team’s season record.

None of these players that are making $400K or better and have a year or two of college left are going to play in some stupid meaningless weed eater bowl and risk getting hurt.

I’ve been saying it forever. Allow the bowl sponsors to attach their name to playoff games, with early playoff games representing the lesser bowls. I’m not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

The Pop Tarts Bowl is the real NCAA championship game.

Traditionally bowls were a reward for good, deserving teams and there were only 6-15 of them in any given season and they mattered because it was a showcase of ranked teams, teams that otherwise would never play and the opportunity to see exciting newcomers on the scene.

Expanding the bowl season to a month of diluted crappy games where every arse 5-7 team with players who don't care gets a participation trophy was "untraditional" and a money grab.

Cue the "who complains about more football?" crowd.

If people watch them and their is a financial gain by the organizers, they will continue.

Very true. That's why personally I could not care any less about the non-playoff bowl games. But that was the case even before the expansion of the CFP. I watch because it is my team. But I don't get upset over a loss or ecstatic over a win.

But they aren't really for the players or even the host city. They are made-for-tv events by the networks because even crappy bowl games get better tv ratings than just about any non-ballgame programing the network could show in those timeslots. As long as the conferences will get paid for participating the minor bowl games will continue

If I can't live in a world where Marshall plays Troy in the Beef O'Brady Bowl, I don't want to live anymore

Probably has a lot to do with Money.

Teams would hate to play every playoff game at a neutral site

I guess by starting the playoff season at home is a decent consolidation prize for making it in the playoffs.

Well since they've been in the same conference for four years now, should Chicken direct his staff put you on suicide watch?

I’m old enough to remember when LSU was terrible in football and we were excited to play in the Independence Bowl.

College football is beyond broken. You can’t be excited if your team is bad and then you have a decent season because A) players are sitting out bowl games and B) you know your good players will transfer for the money the next year.

We should go back to the BCS systems with no NIL or payment and just let HS kids go straight to the USFL/XFL/AFL or whatever it is as an NFL minor league.

All bowls should be moved to week 1. Follow the same procedure of inviting teams based on projections. There are enough bowls to get all of the top 50-60 teams in a competitive week 1 game to start the season. No players will opt out and no teams will turn down bowls. And they would be meaningful again. Season ends with a 12 team playoff. Everybody else goes home.

That would be fun.

They need to be re-invented and become Week 0 games.

Schools will probably push back on that. You already see schools cancelling future home-and-home series vs quality opponents that were already on the schedule, blaming it on the move to 9 conference games. Either because they’d rather schedule a cupcake home game to make sure they have a certain number of home games every year or because they’re afraid of risking a non-conference loss that keeps them out of the CFP. Those schools would push back hard on having to both give up home games AND play a top tier opponent

The original bowls were civic graft dressed up in bunting and pom-poms. Most of the later ones are simple ESPN greed. Many of college footballs current problems can be traced long term to the development stunting corruption of the "bowl system".
