How many of these mercenary kickers actually give a shite whether the team wins?

Some of these guys kick for three teams in one season, and most know they’re only there until the main kicker gets healthy.

I know Garrett Hartley bleeds black & gold.

I assume they probably enjoy the checks that come when they make kicks and stop abruptly when they don't. Weird question

I imagine they would still be given a ring if the team went on to win the Super Bowl, so thats some incentive to care about winning

True, would be cool if someone kicked for both SB teams.

Obviously they want to make kicks for their own interest. Does an injury fill in like Riley Patterson who didn’t even attempt a kick for the Dolphins care that they lost? Probably not much.

Everyone is a mercenary. Employees only care about a company to the extent that it affects their own interests. All of us are primarily motivated by self-preservation.
If I were an NFL kicker, I would rather go 5/5 and lose than 4/5 and win because my primary interest is keeping the paychecks coming and making them bigger if possible.

Almost like it’s their job and they to want to get paid. Why should they give a frick if they win or not?

I’m not sure I understand why kicker is the position used to raise this question.
I’m also not sure why anyone gives a shite about the answer to the question.
This seems more like the kind of question discussed during the off-season.

What a thought provoking topic.

Chris Boswell cares. He is a serial killer with a low pulse rate and ready to deliver.
Yes, these guys care if the team wins. Who doesn't want playoff bonuses?

You missed the point of the OP. He is talking about the journeymen kickers who are only place-holders until the regular kicker returns from injury.

Well, there's a couple mindsets about those guys;
First off, there's a group of kickers who are skilled/good enough, that they hang around on the borders of the game. They don't quite retire and move on to the next phase in their life, because while they didn't make a team, they've got a good chance to be on one for part of a year, make some good money, and have another chance.
Second, most of them harbor some ambition or dream of sticking. Come in, do well enough for the 2-3 games they are there, that they bump the other guy out. Or they bump someone on another team. I think that's still the plan most have.

At the end of the day, a journeyman kicker is still a pro athlete.
Yes, they’re trying to get paid and keep a job, but you don’t get so good at a team sport that you’re paid to play it without caring about wining to some extent. You’re either that competitive or you’re not and if you’re not, I don’t see how a guy would get that far.
They’re not going to go on a Dennis Green-style tirade about losses but I seriously doubt that any of them are completely indifferent about them.

It's a job and a job they are happy to have even if it's for a few weeks since there are such limited job openings. There are 3 times as many people who can claim to be a U.S Senator than there are NFL kickers every weekend.
