- Drew Brees, let him walk away
I would say that most GM/president of ops would have done this. During his time there, he was good, but not great. Add a "career ending" shoulder injury to it, and it's almost a given that most teams would let a player walk after that.
It worked out for everyone. Drew wasn't great Drew until he signed with the saints and got paired with Payton.

Marty eventually gets pissed and says, "We're in New Orleans and we're eating at a Marriott?"
Can’t argue with this.

Still a very young player and a workaholic, special between the ears (top skill). Dunno why you mentioned the GM?

In a nutshell.
Him on a billboard in SD or NYC?
Advertising in the biggest market makes $$$

The thing that sucks is Eli could do it because he was rich basically. Imagine if every player just did this?
It becomes the fricking NBA
I don’t blame him, but we are lucky as fans most players don’t do this(or really can’t afford to do this)

Are you trying to say New Orleans, Oxford, and the general southeastern states are the same as NYC?

Trading away the chance at Micheal Vick
By trading away that pick to the Falcons, they picked up LaDanian Tomlinson with ATL’s #5 pick that same draft, and drafted Brees in the 2nd round.
SD ended up with two HoFers that draft, though yes, they let Brees sign elsewhere after that injury since they had Philip Rivers waiting.
Meanwhile Vick had a few good seasons then was out of the league for two years.

Perhaps.
But he wasn't the first player to do it. Guys with leverage can use that leverage. Elway didn't want to be drafted by Baltimore and made it known. Baltimore drafted him anyway and he said he would just go play baseball for the Yankees organization. He knew that would put Baltimore in a spot where the either own a guy's rights for a few year but get nothing out of him because he won't play for your...OR you trade a valuable asset for another player.
Bo Jakson did the same thing. He blamed the Buccaneers for intentionally making him ineligible to play his final season of baseball at Auburn and refused to play for Tampa. They drafted him anyway and Jackson chose to play baseball for KC.

Yes, I know what happened but they passed on the consensus #1 QB and we don’t know what would’ve happened had they taken him. Like I mentioned you can take each instance and argue it but in totality they didn’t seem to know what to do at that position so it’s a reasonable stance for Eli to be weary. They kept getting these opportunities and kept finding themselves back at square 1.

But you have to give them credit. First response to not wanting to play with them is to say “F it, we’ll just send your arse to Clev”
No, they get no credit for that, it's just another sign of a poorly run organization. Their first concern should have been "what's wrong with our management of the team?"

- Two days before the workout, Cam Cameron (OC) sent him a playbook with a $20 bill taped to the last page. He knew he didn't want to go to San Diego and thought about brushing off the $20 thing to tank his stock, but didn't want word to get around the league that he doesn't read playbooks. So he gave it back to Cam on the side where nobody else could see it.
So that's where Draft Day got that from...

The dysfunction at dinner sounds interesting.
In hindsight, the Chargers should’ve taken Larry Fitzgerald and kept Brees.
Brees with LT, Fitz, Gates could’ve been legendary.

I’ll never understand why organizations do that shite. Elway or Manning, even Bo Jackson. Guy publicly says I refuse to play for you, and they draft him. Just about every situation I can recall, the player ends up not playing for them.
Posted on 5/14/26 at 7:24 pm to HangmanPage1
Eric Lindros did that too. "I'm not playing in Quebec." Nordiques drafted him anyhow and he never played for them.

Steve Francis being drafted by Vancouver as well. He was visibly pissed off lol
