Do you think a weekly top 25 ranking should be predictive or based on results thus far?

I'm an LSU fan. Just want to get that out of the way.
What reason does LSU so far have any reason to be ranked over Arizona? LSU is currently #21/22 in the Coaches and AP poll respectively. Arizona is unranked in both.
Arizona is 5-1. Their only loss is to undefeated BYU by 11 points on the road. Their wins are 42-17 vs NIU, 34-24 on the road at Wazzu, 34-7 at home vs Cincy (this is Cincy's only loss), 52-31 on the road at WVU
LSU is 4-2. Their losses are on the road to Ole Miss by 8, who lost in a blowout to Florida, and on the road to Kentucky by 1 who lost in blowout fashion to Bama. Their wins are all at home, blowouts to Clemson, TAMU, LA Tech, and McNeese. Clemson and TAMU have not looked good outside of the LSU games, they legitimately look like bad teams.
Why exactly is LSU ranked ahead of Arizona? It can only because people "think" they are better. Resume wise it doesn't hold up. So what do you think weekly polls should be? Should they be predictive or should they be more based on what you've done so far, week to week?

Eliminated- they offer no value to how good or bad a team is. But so many fans hang their hat on beating a team that ranked or not ranked. When the entire time we have people ranking teams that don’t follow said teams

You understand the AP, coaches, etc. is just an aggregation of all the voters’ individual polls. They would still do them for clicks whether or not an “official” poll exists

Waiting to have polls until October 1st would eliminate a lot of the Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas, etc teams that are perpetually overrated every single year from being high in the polls or even ranked at all.

I think by this point in the season, it shouldn’t be predictive at all, just based on results (but “results” isn’t just your strength of record, it’s also how good/bad you look in wins/losses, if they’re close or blowouts, etc.).
I think it should still be mostly predictive after week 1, and then gradually move towards more weight on results each week until prob around the end of Sept (after week 4 or week 5) when it should be completely 100% only based on results from that point on.

Results. Always. Predictive is for bitches. “Deserving” over “best.” At least “deserving” is somewhat objective.

It is a bit of both. I bet LSU would be favored vs BYU on a neutral field, but no one would say LSU should be ranked higher right now.

Polls are for stupid people and shouldn’t exist. No real sport has polls. They have standings and known paths to the playoffs. Eventually college football will get there but right now we still have polls to manipulate the ignorant.

You are what your record says you are.

So Baseball, football, and every other amateur sport at every level is not a real sport?

I think they should be a best guess of the voters of how the teams should play in the next week. Any lower ranked team that beats one ranked higher should be considered an upset.

I'm weird, but I think polls should wait until the 5th week or so of the year and be based purely on who you think is better. Meaning - if Team A and Team B met on a neutral field 10 times, who wins the most games.
Every voter do that down the list of teams to figure out who they really think is the best.
Then aggregate all of the polls from voters.

In my weird world, I'd have LSU ahead in this scenario.
Polls aren't for anything. They don't provide a service except understanding who the best teams are.
"Results" isn't just wins and losses, it's watching the teams play and saying "ok, Team A might have two losses and Team B 0 losses, but Team A clearly looks better and more talented"
I know that'll ruffle feathers, but in the end, polls just don't matter so I don't lose sleep over them ever. Would just be fun to do it my way.

So that would be predictive. There are a fair number of analytical metrics out there for that (e.g., FPI, SP+, FEI), I just think once we get to October, an AP voter should not fill out their ballot based on that.
Of course, there’s a little bit of overlap, because results on the field (and, again, results don’t just mean if you win or lose but how you win/lose) are what affect those models.

Maybe we create an AI predictive ranking system where it truly is "who would beat who the most times out of 11" that uses Vegas, statistics, injuries, etc.
But that could technically get circular if models think Teams A,B,C and all beat each other. Then they'd need a tie-breaker of sorts.
I might build this in my free time

The only poll that means anything isn’t released until November and the AP circle jerk is usually exposed as a fraud when they follow suit the following week and change their rankings to mirror it.

I'm only interested in the best teams, not some kind of arbitrary "deserving" bullshite.
Vegas should rank them. No one knows more about a team's worth than they do.
