Then the player would not be required to sit out a year.

We seem to be benefiting but still don’t like the portal?

Athletic scholarships are renewed yearly. The scholarship reimbursement is for the academic year. The athlete gets nothing in return.

There have been plenty of key players transferring to conference rivals. Ricks and burton come to mind

I disagree. I've always hated the rule that players have to sit out a year.

So I like the transfer portal. It's different, but I don't think it's a bad thing.

it's real simple: transfer and you reimburse the cost of the scholarship and whatever expenses LSU spent on the player. No exceptions. Check in hand when you enter the portal.

I’ve felt this way for a long time. Same if you declare for the draft or sit a bowl game.

Unpopular opinion and I welcome the downvotes.

Well, that's absurd. Reimburse "expenses" if a player leaves after a season? How does that make sense at all? They still rendered their services for that season.

I know the NFL has an antitrust exemption from Congress that allows them to institute the rules they have, would the NCAA need this exemption to enforce any of these hypothetical rules? Isn't that why the NIL came into being because the NCAA knew they were going to lose the court cases coming down the pike? I don't know, just asking.

If I were the King and ultimate ruler of the NCAA, I would make it so that the only school a kid couldn’t go to would be the school that his former coach goes to. There could be exceptions, like if a coach gets fired and hired somewhere else. But a coach who voluntarily leaves for greener pastures (and $$$$$$$s) shouldn’t use his current players to fill the roster of his next destination, i.e., Caleb Williams and any of those kids from Jackson State.

The biggest thing that needs to be fixed are the signing windows. Transfers should only be allowed over the summer. Also they can get rid of the early singing period in December. Go back to the one big one in the spring.

Makes two major off-season events for college football.

All transfers sit out a year period. Keep it simple and stop the free agency. Some of these guys transfer 3 & 4 times, it's out of hand.

JT Daniels is on his 4 school this spring, face it dude you're not that good, get your degree and move on with life.

Here’s the ultimate problem fans have with the portal: Fans want players (especially star players) to love the program as much as they love it and want to be able to identify with them. When they’re moving around like mercenaries, some of that is lost.

But the irony is fans love players very conditionally. If there’s a 5th year senior QB at Alabama who’s solid but unspectacular, paid his dues, grew up in Tuscaloosa with Bama posters all over his walls - but some hotshot freshman 5 star from California who couldn’t give a shite about anything but the NFL is a better player, who does everyone want to start?

I’m all for the portal and young athletes maximizing their opportunities.

Problem with that is that the team that loses the coach could lose most of their team and how do they replace those players if they can’t use the portal
You can’t have a team with all freshmen

scholarships aren’t 4 year guarantees they renew on a year to year basis. They’re not going to force a player to pay back something when they lived up to their end of the bargain for that year.

I don't debate that. I just want consistency. If the coaches don't have to sit out when they change schools, the players shouldn't have to sit out when they change schools. If the players have to sit out, then make coaches sit out. Restrict neither or restrict both.

I've always thought something here this was the solution. Make scholarships guarantees and they negotiation between schools and players can determine how long the guarantees are for. You're a 3* TE being recruited by a blue blood and you'll get a different guarantee than a 5*. Players can bet on themselves and only want a 1 year guarantee vs a 4 year so that if they blow up they can transfer. If you are on a guaranteed scholarship then you cannot play after transferring until that time is up. If you aren't you can do whatever you want. It's basically like signing a contract in the NFL but just with scholarships. Schools are on the hook for more but it would slow/stop player movement.

I love how Harbaugh complains about the kids now-a-days. How they want handouts, etc then openly campaigns for NFL jobs.

I transferred schools when I was in college and had a scholarship at the first one. Should I have had to repay that? Of course not.

They should be treated like any other student. It’s obviously messy and there are other ways, but this is far from the answer.
