An idea to repair the transfer rules

Before Covid, players (that had not graduated) that transferred were required to sit out a year at their new school. There were those that said it wasn’t fair that if a coach left he could coach the next season, but players had to wait.

So the NCAA began allowing players to transfer without having to sit out a year during Covid. The idea was the players signed with a school and may have never visited the campus. Their only connection may have been Zoom calls with coaches. I believe this was a good idea and it was certainly well intentioned.

Now players are making all of their recruiting trips and signing with their school of choice. They are making the same level of informed decisions as players before Covid.

Why not go back to the pre-Covid rules, with one exception. If the head coach, co-ordinator or position coach leaves then the player can transfer without having to sit out a year.

Is this too simple of a solution for a very complex problem?

So if a coach leaves for another program he can take every player with him if he wanted?

I agree that something needs to change, but this isn't the solution. If coaches don't have to sit out a year, players shouldn't have to sit out a year.

it's real simple: transfer and you reimburse the cost of the scholarship and whatever expenses LSU spent on the player. No exceptions. Check in hand when you enter the portal.

If a player can’t get on the field at a certain school or doesn’t fit their scheme, they should be allowed to transfer but these players who are already starting and transferring to in conference rivals for more NIL money is basic free agency with no salary cap.

This doesn’t happen to regular students on scholarship. Why should it happen to athletes?

What sense does that make?

What if the school decides not to renew the scholarship?

Sure

And if a player is “processed” after his freshman year, the college has to reimburse him for the remaining 4 years of eligibility in the form of cash

I don't know what the solution is, but I'm almost certain the NCAA will frick it up.

Whats the big deal with the transfers? If a kid that is third string and scared to compete wants to jump to another school, who GAF?

Since they sign NIL deals and pretty much are contracted employees with these deals and NLIs for the school why not just put in a buyout clause like they do with coaches?
If the player or new school wants to give a school $1m to leave, I'm sure bk will find another player to give the money to

That or put in a playing time rule, guys playing 80% of their teams snaps should need a legit reason to transfer

I think The rule should be:

1 Transfer after 3 years
1 transfer after completion of undergrad degree
You can transfer if your HC is fired or leaves.

The portal isn’t changing. No governing body will infringe on players rights without being taken to court. Collective bargaining is the only thing that will create some structure to the portal and NIL.

Depends on the scholarship & who is funding it. Some academic scholarships may have a repay requirement if the student transfers or even switches majors.
