The prom part sucks anyway, just get home for the after parties, and you're good to go.
As a guy I agree, but I can see where a Senior girl would want all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds 'her' senior prom. The fairer sex likes to be dolled up to make other girls jealous. It's the same reason my ex took two suitcases on long weekend vacations and had to shop for every event we went to. Meanwhile I could pack a carry-on for a two week vacation and get dressed for an event I forgot about from my corner of the closet in 10 minutes or less.

This is based on your view that the older generations were correct.

The older generations are absolutely correct that when you make a commitment you honor it.

It looks like the championship games are on Long Island, and the school is up north of Albany. So roughly a 5 hour trip.

not to mention that prom is basically a girl's dry run for her wedding day... so getting ready for it is an all day affair

that game really cuts into make-up and hair-fixing time

What if they had made commitments to go to the prom with someone. Shouldn’t they honor those as well?

Why is prom the same time as a softball game?

Just the way things coincide. Championships and proms always happen at the end of the school year; sometimes there is an overlap.

I remember when I was a senior in HS, the State meet happened the weekend of prom. My race would have been early on Sunday, so my options were to skip prom, go to the dance and come home right after, or chance not performing at my best for State. The 6th place finish in Regionals made the decision for me , but it was a conversation I was having with my parents on the way to the meet.

A few of my buddies, starters on the football team, skipped a playoff game in high school to go to a Rush concert. It was rumored the coach turned a shade of red and began sweating in the lockerroom before the game (which was a sure loss in any case).

Anyway, that’s all I got.

I was a rising freshman and told them before the season ever started.

The coach’s response was “Yeah, we probably won’t need you that deep if we get there.”

No way I could skip an opportunity for a state championship over fricking prom.

But could you skip for prom fricking?

It's why high school sports are going to shite. Committing to a team, especially at the high school level is about putting something above self, but so many in this generation refuse to do that, but still want to be a part of a team. Why am I not playing, why am I not playing the position I want, I have to miss for this, I have to miss for that, blah, blah, selfish, nothing is more important than me and what I want right now.

Not every team everywhere is going to be as gung ho competitive as what we’re used to

Multiple people in the thread espousing those exact thoughts. It's why high school sports are going to shite.

High school sports are going to shite b/c of insane a-hole parents who all think Gunner and Kaley are going pro and force them to play year round travel ball in whatever sport they wish they'd been good at when they were young and forced on their kids.

Yup. Girls prioritize this sort of thing a lot differently than guys. I remember my ex, prom date at the time, she got up early in the morning and had nail appointment, hair, makeup, wax, etc. Her entire day was dedicated to getting ready for prom.
Meanwhile for me, I was at the rec gym playing basketball up until an hour before prom started.

Meanwhile

Good lord, for prom?!

I nearly skipped walking at graduation because of baseball. Walked across the stage, straight out a side door, and headed straight to the airport to fly to NYC for a workout.

And if I had to skip graduation it wouldn’t have even been a thought.

Skipping the playoffs for prom is unbelievable.

High school sports really isn’t that important to some. Or maybe they don’t like the coach

I would say "latish" June -not end of June. And I'm sure the seniors get out earlier than the other grades.

This story is from a school north of Albany, so.

This is the exact kind of self-absorbed crap that is an epidemic with this current generation and their parents.

Or, sports is assigned a healthy role in parts of the country that value other things.

You will never see a story like this about a team in the South.

vast majority of kids play because they're either good and it's fun for them or for pussy/status/clout

I get it. Different people prioritize things differently. Some people play sports for the fun of it. Some play because it's an excuse to not have to come home, and they get to hang out with friends.
Personally, for football, I would agree with you. I too would have skipped prom or even graduation for football. Hell, my girlfriend in high school broke up with me, because we had a date planned. But I stood her up because some guys invited me to join them in a workout.

Meanwhile I also played baseball, soccer, and track in high school. Admittedly, I didn't care nearly as much about those. I played for fun and to pass time. Who knows, I possibly would have skipped one of those games for something silly like prom.
