but its more fun to speculate how the modern game would look without a 3 point line

I think it could be fun

Maybe it would be. There’s just zero chance that it ever would be was my only real point there

why would the game have to go back to this without the 3pt line?

Teams are still going to look for the most advantageous shot statistically so they will turn back into post play and floater type plays in order to get the best shots available without the spacing that 3 point shooting provides

Getting rid of the 3 point line doesn’t fix the issue of how devalued deeper 2s are

I enjoy the way basketball has evolved, but watching someone like Hakeem or Duncan work the post was a treat.

Yeah, I don't think they would ever take away the 3 point shot, but I could see them taking away the corner 3, and possibly moving the line back a bit.

I almost mentioned something about maybe they could move the line back, but I don't know how they would deal with the corner 3

the corner 3 is and will always be my favorite shot, I'd hate to see it go away

There’s no diversity in players or play style anymore and no one plays defense anymore.

And here come the stans saying they didn’t play defense in the early 80s either like that changes anything about today.

There was a dark period in the early 2000s- 2010 where most teams were just running hero ball offense and it was ghastly

Steve Francis/Cat Mobley offenses were brutal to watch. It was like watching two people play on the same team in 2k.

Nah, I’ve been waiting for the 4 and 5 point lines for a decade at least.

In hindsight it’s kind of shocking it took everyone this long to figure that out

Physicist Sean Carroll had Darrel Morey on his podcast recently and Morey gave 2 reasons for this, stuff that seemed right but was proven wrong when analytics started taking over and things got charted:

- Players hit medium range 2's at about the same rate as 3's so the medium range shots were shown to be pointless.

- Coaches used to think that long rebounds from 3's gave up more offensive rebounds but actually 3's don't allow more offensive rebounds.

Yeah, there is no way they get rid of the 3 point line. Move it back? Maybe. Get rid of? No!

As an older fan, I have no issue with the amount of 3 point shots being taken. What I hate is that no defense is played. Let them hand check like back in the day, call traveling for the love of god, and if anyone goes into the lane a big man should have the right to demolish a little guy who runs in and tosses up a shot.

it was figured out, but 3 point percentages weren’t enough to base offense around it. It could change back again if the foul limit per game was lowered from 6 to 5. That would give teams more incentive to attack the paint

That increases the excitement

This is debatable. Balance and contrasting styles contribute to excitement also. Excitement comes from rare events also. Baseball is running into the same issue. Home runs and strikeouts are skyrocketing. The HR is not a rarity anymore, so it doesn’t produce the same level of hype.

A basketball example would be the dunk contest.

quote:

allows for teams to stay in the game late.

Only when it comes to fouling. Otherwise, if both teams jack up 3’s at the same right, it’s not helping the loser stay in the game.

jacking up 3s is the most "streetball' thing you can do

Watching college basketball these last couple of weeks and kids are still taking a TON of twos from one step inside the arc. NBA coaches would sit their asses on the bench for that.

Baylor scorched Gonzaga with the mid range to long 2. And once they established they could make them, they couldn’t just say back and play rim protect.

I think it is officiating that has aided this. They don’t let you near someone shooting a three.

They won’t give big men the foul calls they deserve in the paint.

Also from 94 to 95 the 3PA per game went up from 9.9 to over 15. Anyone know why such a sizable increase(50 percent) in one season?
