40 percent of shots taken in the NBA are 3’s.

The average for 3 pointers attempted per team per game this season is 34.7. It was 18 attempts per game just ten years ago in the 2011 season. In 1994 it was 9.9 attempts per game average, totaling less than 12 percent of all field goals attempted. It’s been an absolutely incredible change and I would assume the college basketball numbers are similar in trends.Where does this go? Does it just keep trending towards more and more 3’s? Also, interesting fact, the average height of NBA players is the same now as it was in 1963.(6’6)

its crazy that I can envision a scenario where they go completely backwards and remove the 3 point line

Efficiency is king. Unless the rules change, why should they shoot fewer threes?
Watching college basketball these last couple of weeks and kids are still taking a TON of twos from one step inside the arc. NBA coaches would sit their asses on the bench for that.

Certainly a big factor, but also teams are not taking long 2 point shots any more. These days you’ll get scolded if you pull up from the FT line trying to make a jumper
The stretch 5s are a product of the increase in 3s and wing offense, not the other way around

for years the NBA was called "street ball" and people criticized it for a "lack of skill"
the league evolves into a highly skilled passing/shooting league, and people criticize it for being too skilled

Or just a massive change in the rules. Most NBA euro steps are actually 3 step travels nowadays. No handchecking/any form of physical defense.
It doesn't take any skill to draw foul calls when they blow the whistle at first touch of contact for any star.
Better long distance shooters I'll give, but certainly not more skilled. Quite the opposite. You can be trash at everything else, but if you shoot 3's, you can make the NBA.

I agree with you but the thread starter wasn’t being critical imo, just sharing his observation.
There are certainly a ton of critiques though from older fans, at least on here and among Nba veterans in their late 40s and 50s.
If attendance, tv deals, etc keeps strong, I don’t see why anything would change. However if those things do go down,I expect the three point line to be brought back 18 inches or so.

There was a dark period in the early 2000s- 2010 where most teams were just running hero ball offense and it was ghastly
At one point it was basically like making someone a captain as to who got to hold onto the ball for 20 seconds of the shot clock before jacking up a bad shot. Looks fine when Lebron did it against the pistons in 2007, but then you have the other teams doing the same thing but with a guy trying to trick a team into a bad contract by stat padding on a bad team

LSU has had a top 25 scoring and efficient offense for the last 3 years yet we play “unorganized streetball” per the rant

if every game just because a 3 point competition?
there are teams that are completely unwatchable due to them just chunking up quick 3s all game

That increases the excitement and allows for teams to stay in the game late. They would never get rid of it

The NBA would disagree. Nobody wants to watch guys take bad 20 footers either
The invention of the 3 point line was a huge reason for the explosion of popularity of the sport back in the 80s.
Ball movement and 3 point shooting all over the floor is much more exciting to watch than 20 seconds of post play frickery that late career shaq was doing

I just checked and there are 87 players who are shooting >50% from 2 this season (this is including shots in the restricted area, which are also part of the emphasis in the "new" NBA). There are 140 players who are shooting >33% from 3.

you're obviously right
but its more fun to speculate how the modern game would look without a 3 point line
I think it could be fun

why would the game have to go back to this without the 3pt line?

Exactly, it’s just simple math
In hindsight it’s kind of shocking it took everyone this long to figure that out
