Ran a scenario, at 4m in retirement accounts earning at vanguard historical avg, you could pull nearly 350k a year for 30yrs

That's an 8.75% withdrawal rate. If you run a monte carlo, the failure rate is gonna be substantial even without inflation adjustments I'd guess. What assumptions did you use. Did you use straight line returns or run scenarios based on volatility? A few down years up front would wreck that plan due to sequence of returns risk.

No, you are normal. This board is filled with outliers or liars.

Your numbers would but you comfortably in the top 25% and just on the outside of the top 10% for wealth in today dollars.

That is a good retirement.

Comparison is the thief of joy. If you start early it makes a huge difference.

That much saved at that age places Ocean near the top 1% for his age range, which means he is doing better than 99% of the people here.

I would tell everyone to not use him as a baseline

My wife is a VP and I’m in sales making close to my wife.

Wife $24,500 401k $4,400 HSA around 10k employer match

I do 12k into 401k company match around 12k. Another 2k in dividends from company stock.

$700 a month($8400) to my FA advisor to back door my Roth every year. Rest just stays in brokerage I have with them.

12k into my brokerage I manage per year and the rest goes into HYSA. Once I get too much in my HYSA I’ll lump sum invest into brokerage or something else like land or business opportunity.

We contribute about 78000 into our 401k a year with the company matches. Next year I hit 50 and will do the catchup contribution (will be in a Roth because of income). The following year my wife will turn 50 so we will be putting in 94000. Now we are way behind in contributions as a whole (we have a special needs kid and it costs a hell of a lot). But I hope by 65 we have 5 million.

I’m capped at 6% so I really hope I can put the catchup in my Roth 401k at 50 vs still being capped at 50. Sucks I can’t do the 24,500 now but with my current balance I think I will be fine. I’d love to lower my taxable income now but will take anything extra at 50.

Just do the most you can. Between annual cash bonuses I hope to out another 40-50k in vti. I need to have money to support my kiddo though when we are gone so will stick to a strict 4% draw.

Well this board is also an outlier in general. People that go out of their way to discuss finances are going to be ahead of the curve in general.

The fact that over 40% of americans don't have any sort of retirement and that 60% don't have 1k laying around to cover an emergency expense puts everyone on this board in the upper tier of Americans.

no reason to lie here. most all REGS here are well off. i said this 10 years ago here. this board is an ANOMALY.

this board is filled with very successful persons who own businesses, real estate, traders, long term investors, etc, etc, etc.

ANNUAL INCOME

Top 0.1% $3,212,486
Top 1% $823,763
Top 5% $342,987
Top 10% $173,176

LINK

this board has some in top 5% and plenty in the top 10%.

Sounds pretty good to me. I’m hoping to be worth about the same around that age, maybe a little more. My plan is to have north of $500,000 in 401k’s at 65 that we can draw on with SS until 70+. That will give the Roths an extra 5-7 years to grow. We want to burn 401k’s first since we’ll have taxes on that and move to Roth’s, tax free, in our 70’s.

nobody here is making anything up. This board is about making money and helping others make money. It has certainly made a bunch for me
