I lost (on paper) 50% in 2008 but I had a lot less money in the market when I was 30 years old too

Haha! I barely noticed 2008 for the same reasons. Today staring a six digit losses hits just a bit different. I've been on track to retire in a few years at 55 and laughed to my wife that I may have to log an extra couple years now.

I’m not looking at my 401k but will increase my deposits today for purchase power. I’ve got 3 more years bf I want to retire at 62.

Unfortunately this board lacks of investment mindset. It’s mostly about seeing which individual stocks can make the most money short term rather than looking at the big picture with growth in ETFs and long term investing.

The good thing though is I've been on this board long enough to weed through posters who bring value I can use. Sadly, I've seen some also chase off a few posters that brought great insight.

I started a new job recently and rolled over my previous 401k into rollover/roth IRA. Funds posted yesterday morning at 8 am and I immediately reinvested.

Wish I hadn’t been so on-it to get them back in the market…

This board is mostly about guys without a bunch of equity trying to get rich quick. It has not been about smart money or investing. More people on here losing money that making it.

Agreed. This board was way different 10-12 years ago.

No not at all. I started investing in 2000 and have survived several dips.
I will be 51 in February and have started preparing for retirement i pulled some money off the table and went in to bonds the last month or so just because my company match stock was at a all time high as well as the sp500 being where it was.
I currently have what will be 5yrs of bond fund put aside to supplement my pension payment I plan to take at retirement. My plan is to be able to retire if I want to on the same week that the market takes a shite if I want too in 5-7yrs from now.

Many people think they can never retire and blow large sums of money chasing the next big thing.

Slow and steady investors continue to retire comfortably and can sleep at night with diversification.

I will say that the current concentration in the s&p500 is not a good thing. A major AI correction would be beneficial to the market

Be an investor

An investor focuses on building wealth over time, evaluates value, weighs risk against potential return, diversifies, and follows a disciplined plan. They accept uncertainty while seeking favorable long-term odds.

A gambler focuses on the excitement of winning, chases quick gains, reacts emotionally, takes unnecessarily big risks (without calculation) and lets hope and excitement replace analysis and discipline.

The gamblers reveal themselves quick in sudden downturns.

Or some of us have our actual retirement in traditional vehicles and use this board for fun money.

He just took million(s) $ decision and has no idea that’s what he did.

His future self just whimpered.
